In 2015 I saw punk band Titus Andronicus 3 times in London when they were touring a new album. They introduced a new member the first show and by the 3rd had entirely changed their lineup except the front man, including the new member they'd introduced about 6 months earlier.

Always been infinitely curious about what happened there.

If they'd been hired cash in hand at a German Christmas market for tax avoidance purposes then the owner could have claimed "No, the droogs don't work, they just make you wurst"

I used to spend hours pouring over those.

Might treat myself to the book of those as I've got some Xmas money to spend.

I watched the TV series. Actually hearing the stories is more interesting to me than looking at pages of connections.

I remember finding it funny how Napalm Death is one of the biggest bands out there in grindcore and none of the original members are in it.

Like, they've have a consistent line up for decades but it's just that all the founding members said "gently caress it" after a couple of years.

Hell. Sides 1 & 2 of their debut record Scum have almost entirely different lineups. Side 1 is Justin Broadrick, Mick Harris & Nic Bullen, side 2 is Lee Dorrian, Bill Steer, Jim Wheatley & Mick Harris.

Side note but I think I've all those guys live except Wheatley, and none of them were with Napalm Death. Dorrian was Cathedral, Bullen was this loving weirdo behind a laptop with 2 other people behind laptops, Harris with Scorn (Bullen & Harris were at different versions of the Birmingham music festival Supersonic), Broadrick with both Godflesh & Jesu and Steer with Carcass. (I have also seen Napalm Death several times with their mostly stable since 1991 lineup of Barney, Shane, Danny & confusingly Mitch Harris, no relation to Mick Harris

Pretty sure I saw some proper boomer brain "send them all back" nonsense from Bullen recently, which was a shame. But the rest of the band still seen pretty decent on the whole. Certainly Shane & Barney are incredibly pleasant.

Jeff Walker of Carcass also did the artwork for Scum, IIRC

I'd argue Heartwork isn't even the best Carcass album, but I'm also the guy who thinks the first 2 At The Gates records dump all over Slaughter of the Soul so I'm just not a melodeath guy. I was at one point but yeah, I like a few more rough edges on my music generally speaking. So I'd plump for Necrotism Descanting The Insalubrious, which has some of those surprisingly catchy hooky riffs from Heartwork but slightly less polish too, without being a barely-listenable mess production-wise like Reek of Putrefaction.

I'm all about the polish. I never understood production that sounds intentionally bad. Sloppy playing is fine, to an extent, but if your black metal band sounds like it was recorded via Walkman headphones then nah I'm fine thanks.

That's the thing with Necrotism I like, it nails the sweet spot, it's not a slick melodeath record but it's still well produced. Honestly, my favourite production is "I'm not aware of the production". Some recorded on a 4 track black metal band trying to recreate the sounds of Darkthrone doing Transilvanian Hunger isn't particularly interesting to me (especially when I can just listen to Transilvanian Hunger) but then there's some rough punk demos I've heard which are much more exciting than their later records.

There's a 6 minute, 9 track demo I have from a Russian punk band called Viva La Vulva & it's one my favourite records of 2017. And I don't think they ever recorded anything else, at least not that made it to Bandcamp, but it's raw as hell & that just adds to the charm.

Feel like there's a difference between garbage production & raw production but it's one of those things that I don't really have the vocabulary to describe

This gets me every time - the 'one bad apple' phrase seems to be taken to mean the opposite of what it originally did. It doesn't mean "there's just one bad apple, the rest are fine", it's "one bad apple spoils the bunch".

Tolerating 'the one bad apple' spreads its rot to the rest of the institution. As we see repeatedly with the police.
