I've never seen people more mad than when I was at that playoff game where Curtis Granderson swung and missed by like 3 inches and for some reason the third base umpire stopped play and called it a foul tip. It was so egregious that the people running the video board put it up on the screen, even though they're not supposed to for ball/strike calls.

It seems that Cubsworld has largely recognized that Bartman got hosed over and was not to blame, and feel bad about it.

Unfortunately it's too late as the incident kinda ruined his life, he ended up moving away from Chicago and surely did not get to enjoy the catharsis of 2016 as fully as he deserved to.

edit: at least I thought I read he left the city? Maybe my memory is wrong on that

The Cubs gave Bartman a ring after they won in 2016 and Bartman issued this statement.

Steve Bartman posted:

Although I do not consider myself worthy of such an honor, I am deeply moved and sincerely grateful to receive an official Chicago Cubs 2016 World Series Championship ring. I am fully aware of the historical significance and appreciate the symbolism the ring represents on multiple levels. My family and I will cherish it for generations. Most meaningful is the genuine outreach from the Ricketts family, on behalf of the Cubs organization and fans, signifying to me that I am welcomed back into the Cubs family and have their support going forward. I am relieved and hopeful that the saga of the 2003 foul ball incident surrounding my family and me is finally over.

I humbly receive the ring not only as a symbol of one of the most historic achievements in sports, but as an important reminder for how we should treat each other in today’s society. My hope is that we all can learn from my experience to view sports as entertainment and prevent harsh scapegoating, and to challenge the media and opportunistic profiteers to conduct business ethically by respecting personal privacy rights and not exploit any individual to advance their own self-interest or economic gain.

Moreover, I am hopeful this ring gesture will be the start of an important healing and reconciliation process for all involved. To that end, I request the media please respect my privacy, and the privacy of my family. I will not participate in interviews or further public statements at this time.

Words alone cannot express my heartfelt thanks to the Ricketts family, Crane Kenney, Theo Epstein, and the entire
Cubs organization for this extraordinary gift, and for providing the City of Chicago and Cubs fans everywhere an
unforgettable World Championship in 2016. I am happy to be reunited with the Cubs family and positively moving
forward with my life.

Steve all around just seems like a good guy and it's really sad what happened to him but I think most fans recognize that now. It seems there has been some amount of reconciliation.

Even prior to 2016 I don't think there were that many fans who still blamed Steve, the ESPN special Catching Hell really helped highlight how lovely a situation it was for Steve it was much more of a in the moment and the surrounding media circus of 2003 that people were angry about it. I'm sure you can still find people who are mad about it but the team making a conciliatory gesture probably helped.

Miserable story about the founder of Baseball Prospectus.

quote:

The man who founded Baseball Prospectus, who created a book that became a website that helped revolutionize an industry, no longer watches baseball. He can’t.

A spinal injury robbed Gary Huckabay first of his ability to walk, then of his eyesight and finally of his passion for the sport. He tried listening to games on the radio, but it wasn’t the same.
...
Huckabay, now 57, started Baseball Prospectus to prove there was a better, smarter way to run a team. So much of his life back then centered on the sport. He played and managed in semi-pro leagues, consumed books and crunched numbers, and disappeared for hours into online forums, where he read and argued and bonded with strangers he came to admire (and a few he called “chowderheads”).

That’s gone, too.

“I’ve never really had a large number of friends, mostly because I worked so much,” he says. “But that hit has actually been profound. Yeah. I miss it horribly.”

He once created an entire projection system named Vladimir, in honor of his favorite pizza place, that forecast every hitter in baseball. Now he cannot tell you one player on one team.

“Not a single one,” he says.

Edited to avoid another boring fight with my good friends in the baseball thread and mcmagic however my two legit beefs are:

1: that they gave Evan Drellich a byline on that article.
2: actually what pisses me off the most is everyone still believing hte Altuve buzzer bullshit despite the fact that: it was a fastball-hunting scheme so a buzzer would've had Altuve laying off that meatball and 2: the Beltran niece account was confirmed to be a burner from a notorious WFAN troll but everyone just ignored that because they like to be mad

Anybody who blames Bartman is a dumbass. If there's anybody to get mad at, it's Gonzalez botching the world's easiest grounder which if fielded even remotely well would have resulted in an inning ending double play and kept the Cubs in the lead.

I was at both of these games. The first one was legitimately scary, at first it seemed like Lucroy may have gotten like, a serious spinal cord injury.

I still don't think Kyle went, but I'm such a terrible judge of whether a batter went or not that I'm probably just wrong.

Who gives a poo poo? It's a rebuilding team that will be lucky to sniff winning 80 games. If Mervis fails so spectacularly that you can't play him, just let Wisdom be the everyday 1B for the rest of the season. He's better than Hosmer anyway.

The issue is that you play the old vet if you're competing for something. The Cubs aren't. Use the season to see if Mervis can be their everyday first baseman. They can't decide if they're a rebuilding team or going all-in for a 3rd place finish.

You gotta be ready to invest tens of thousands when you're only 2-3 utility infielders away from contention.

There's literally no reason not to see what Mervis can do (The Mancini signing makes sense as a potential platoon partner/DH/Insurance Policy) since he's gonna be 25 next season and it's not like the Cubs would look to extend him after 30 anyway. Unless Mervis completely and utterly shits the bed in spring- and even then, small sample size, Hosmer breaking camp with the team would be a huge organizational failure.

Wasn’t that for daily fantasy, though? If I recall, there were a few sharks out there gaming the algorithm and using inside info so they could win an obscenely disproportionate percentage of the daily prize pools.

Nowadays, they just do regular old sports bets you can make with any casino or bookie. Not that there won’t be a major gambling/game-fixing scandal in one or more of the big 4 within the next 20 years mind you.
