It's amazing what they can do with computers these days.

I assumed it was whatever school was last/graduated from. Burrow would count for OSU and LSU otherwise. Just guessing.

Seems good? I honestly don't really know, but it's news so I'll post it.

The only downside is can OSU keep up the level at WR that hartline was delivering? History says no, but maybe there is less good 'ol boy cronyism now, and these coaches are actually good at their jobs.

I legitimately don’t think Golding is the problem with that defense right now—their structure’s not going to be something a DC has any actual power to take on as long as Saban is alive. They live and die based on their wardaddy DTs and Georgia has been just beating them to the punch there. This whole year they were supposed to be able to drop 7 at any time with what they had in the front but they couldn’t because the DTs couldn’t gap crush anymore. He’s not a DC that necessarily covers for anything, but I don’t think this is like a Grantham situation. Maybe grabbing Schumann helps and lets them adapt some of the bunch/cluster answers and sun pressure that Kirby has been working with, but the trade off there is that end up de-emphasizing a bunch of the edge guys they’re signing right now in favor of bringing LBs and spilling things wide. Kinda fits with Nick’s frustration habit of bringing pressure on 3rd better if they can gamble on stopping runs without 2 yards and get 3rd and long more consistently.

I happen to agree with you. Golding wasn't the sole problem, for sure. It's also known that Nick Saban does meddle with that side of the ball quite a bit, but Smart and Pruitt before him had enough backbone to stand up to him and get the job done almost 100% of the time. They were also much more adept at making adjustments in-game. I hadn't given up on Golding and tried really hard to come around on him until the LSU game this year. That broke me. Seeing only a single DL lined up on 3rd and long, and LSU audibles to a run and converts... multiple times to send the game to OT. I was also really down on the guy in 2020, because the offense was so electric that year that it completely hid the fact the defense couldn't defend the deep ball, get pressure or force turnovers. It never improved either.

My thing with Golding is that if you're a young coordinator and your name is never really attached to any big boy job rumors, then maybe you aren't that great. Always seemed like just A Dude to me, totally replaceable.

That said, Bama's defensive "issues," such as they were, have been more of a "for whatever reason our players have the joie de vivre of a fat 8th grader being forced to run laps" problem than scheme IMO

Ha, agree on both points. I thought it was interesting that a Bama team who was arguably "the best ever" in 2020 saw its OC hired to take on one of the biggest jobs in college football, along with several other assistants poached for huge job upgrades. Meanwhile, not one tiny whisper of interest coming from any direction that Pete was on anyone's radar. And yeah, the "make their rear end quit" mantra of 2008-2017 seemed 100% dead and absent from the past two years of Bama defense. Whatever is contributing to the lower effort needs to be the ffseasn focus for Bama if they're going to make a run at a natty again before Saban shoves off into retirement.

I actually glad to see he's at Gainesville High (GA), where former Hoover coach Josh Niblett is now. Josh is a good coach with a pretty sterling track record of player development, so at least I am pretty confident he won't get thrown into varsity ball until he's actually ready for it and knows what he's doing. I've seen way too many coaches mishandle giants like him. A bigger challenge is going to be keeping from buying into his own hype from 20-something year old recruiting bloggers who see "size you can't coach" and send the hype-train into overdrive.

I'm not saying it was all Kirby, but it really seems like the best years of the Alabama defense is when he was DC. Saban should have his pick of assistants, but with the recent defensive success at UGA, it is pretty clear that Kirby (and to an extent Pruitt) were a big part of that "make them quit" mentality.

The timing is awkward at a minimum, but coincidental. Rumor mill had already been going all season that he wasn't what Franklin wanted.

Last week, they'd brought Calvin Lowry in, who'd played for PSU back in my day (against Stubblefield even, because we're all middle aged now). He'd played safety, but his previous job was WR coach at Tulsa. That move seemed to be a sign for the people who had been unhappy with Stubblefield.

I think one issue with Stubblefield is that although he's a good position coach and improved WR drops considerably, he's not a great recruiter. Penn State has a 5* QB coming up next year and there have been a lot of misses on top WR recruits.

Kayak is true
Do y'alls programs run recruiting for each position through the position coach? That seems weird.

Tech has assistants run regions and even specific schools within those regions. Been that way through all the coaches that I can remember. So the LB coach may recruit that #1 WR. Of course, the WR coach is probably still involved, but he wouldn't be a player's first point of contact or even be meant to be the closer..

I was curious and looked through Tennessee’s recruiting class and it’s pretty much 1:1 through the class on the position coach showing as the credited recruiter for the player at their position.

But I know in the past it wasn’t like that. Under Pruitt our best recruiter was a TE coach. Idk how 247 fills in that info, like if the school provides it or what, but it looks like either under Heupel yeah you recruit for the position you’re coaching, or when the information is submitted the position coach is just listed as the recruiter for the player’s position regardless.

I also noticed there’s a primary and a secondary recruiter listed, and the defensive or offensive coordinator is listed as the secondary recruiter in all cases. I don’t think I’ve noticed that before.

Komet

I guess the recruiting structure can change a lot from team to team, but I do think it helps to have a position coach that actively recruits his position. At Penn State, I think that generally the position coaches recruit their positions. Manny Diaz is also the LB coach, and some great LBs are being brought in now that want to play for him. Whether he recruits them directly or that's delegated to an underling, I'm not sure. I think Mike Yurcich is more focused on X's and O's and QB development, so I don't think he recruits much, so other offensive coaching staff does much of the legwork on that side of the ball.

It definitely seems to depend on the program. I know Nebraska has had recruiters receive credit bring in players from way outside their position group across multiple administrations. I think in some cases regional ties are the foundation for a specific coach to start the recruiting process and position coaches and the most charismatic "salesmen" come in later in the process. I know when Bill Callahan was head coach that John Blake was brought in as the closer on pretty much every high-profile player, regardless of position.

At UGA it tends to be regional and position coaches doing the secondary recruiting. Our OC Monken literally has no obligation to recruit which kind of owns. If he goes out to visit a recruit, it shows a real serious want of that kid. Kirby too, he is active but tends to do in home visits for priority folks

Yeah I always thought it was very regional. Like it doesn't make sense for 3 different coaches to be the primary recruiter for 3 kids at the same school.

Obviously position coaches, hc, and coordinators are likely involved different amounts with each recruit. But I thought the geography model was orerrt standard.

Early findings in crash that killed Devin Willock and UGA staffer

Unsurprising stuff so far. Willock wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was ejected. Speeding was also a cause. Early reports indicate the car was going too fast for a curve, hit a curb, then the light poles. They didn't estimate a speed, but the limit there is 40 mph, which even that is too much for what it should be.

Toxicology hasn't been released. Unfortunately, I don't think I'm going to be shocked when it is.
