That makes me wonder.
Are there any good games where the player character is an explicit target of racism or other kind of discrimination?
Preferably in the way that actually affects gameplay, because I'll be honest, nobody NPCs in Skyrim occasionally yelling weak-sauce made-up slurs at you doesn't make me feel anything.

I know Arcanum is one of the games that actually exposes you to reasonably realistic racism if you play as a Gnome or an Orc.
Merchants and Innkeepers will often rip you off and occasional quests will be more annoying to do because you won't be given as much leniency in the high society.
The Great Ace Attorney. This is not a joke.

It's a lighthearted game with a comedic tone, so nobody's dropping slurs or committing hate crimes, but the longer you play the more you become acquainted with the sort of subtle social racism that also permeates a lot of society: people eying you with suspicion because you're a foreigner, talking down to you, belittling you, so on and so forth. It's actually kind of refreshing in a weird way, since it's a topic that so seldom gets addressed. Popular media loves to focus on extreme depictions of discrimination, which are real and did happen (and still happen), but I can't recall too many video games or movies that lingered on the more subtle ways we other each other.

EDIT: As for impacting gameplay, it's a courtroom deduction game where people are prepared to believe things based on the defendant's (or their defense's) race, class, and gender, so yes, it's not just narrative trim.

So the lesbians kissing in the background of a disney movie is a powerful moment of representation? Shouldn't we want more than just token inclusions?

Like, to be clear token inclusion is better than no inclusion and we should still be happy it happens at all. But stopping there seems bad too.

The Steamworld Build demo is fun, just came out today (the demo, game comes out later). It's a city builder where you switch between city and underground view, and both have different gameplay loops but feed into one another, smartly done, recommend giving it a go.

i'm kind of shocked that there's still an active enough playerbase to result in non AI invasions in deathloop, to be honest. it really did seem like they were intending to make a rogue-likish sort of immersive sim where the main selling point was while you were loving around doing dishonored/thief/deus ex stuff you'd be attacked by a human invader but they never really got the whole concept to coalesce and after noodling around with the idea for a while just kind of put it out there

To expand on this, the above-ground part is an Anno clone and the below-ground part is a Dungeon Keeper clone. I haven't played it yet but it looks cool and Anno & DK both own

I'm finally getting around to playing Deathloop and several hours in I think it's rad. I would understand some frustration coming into the game thinking it's going to be a totally open immersive sim where you can figure out a million different ways to get to each target, but knowing that's not really what it is and looking at it more like a really intricate first-person metroidvania game only instead of abilities unlocking things it is your slowly expanding knowledge of the island (and its many four-digit numbers). My only complaint so far is that I've been "invaded" a couple times and it just really didn't work, with neither of us seeming to be able to actually hit each other. I think it's a neat idea but I think I might turn it off the online mode if it doesn't work well.

I stayed offline and felt like it was the right way to go, it was fun to gently caress around doing dumb things that probably would not fly if I suddenly had to deal with a tryharding real player.

i only watched the first hour of forspoken but the protagonist is depicted as a troubled youth in gang trouble with multiple felony charges to their name, squatting in an abandoned apartment building

it's like a hodgepodge of hollywood movie tropes

the discussion of "can't it just be a black character and that's it" is funny to me because, if you look at the average isekai story, it's a power fantasy where someone overworks themselves or just happens to get hit by a truck, and otherwise their life is pretty average if not completely unexceptional. this is not that. the character's blackness does factor in, and i would say, in not a great way from this writing team. the only person frey knows outside of the gang is a judge who apparently ALSO was a troubled youth according to her lore info?? i'm not calling it racist and i'm not a kotaku writer, I just think it's kinda eye-rolly especially when you factor in that "hip hoppy walk" comment. were there any black writers on the team? any consultants? i have no idea. but this could also just speak to the general blandness and genericness of the story in general that they couldn't come up with any interesting ideas and just went to the well.

all i know is. february's got way more interesting games than january and that's all i care about is what's coming up

Outside of any new information reviews have said literally no black writers were involved.

The entire premise is basically just misery porn about being a poor black troubled youth who's only good things in life can get ripped away to propel the story forward.

Glad you're sticking with it. There's cool stuff over there so have fun, but you're probably going to end up heading back to Shaded Citadel eventually so here's some guidance for getting through there if you want it: once you're inside, head to the bottom of the citadel, into the sewer part where it's half flooded and there are big seaweeds trying to eat you, then head all the way right. That's where the yellow guy should be directing you. separate tip for big seaweeds if you need it: hit them with a spear or any thrown object and you'll be safe to swim by for a few seconds. this actually applies to almost every enemy in the game, they all recoil when injured and can't bite you for a bit

Did you visit Looks to the Moon and actually see the robot thing inside? I assumed you did since you were nearby. If you did and it's still pointing you there then it must actually be bugged. Like the yellow thing's whole itinerary is: 1.) Make sure you lay eyes on the thing inside LttM, and then, if you haven't upset it, 2.) Direct you to the Shaded Citadel and on upwards.

Much like all the free games EA is giving away, the true cost is in getting people to sign up to their storefront.

There is always a derail about 'people who won't use other storefronts / why the loyalty to Valve' and I'll all I've gotta say is that I'm on Linux and that none of Humble or itcho.io games need me to run their loving storefront through WINE, nevermind the games themselves.

Forspoken just went from "lol no" to "yeah on sale probably" for me if my computer can run it in a stable, even 30 fps manner.

quote:

You can also adjust how frequently Cuff speaks up. The ambient dialogue in Forspoken doesn’t vary much, and repetitive quips in combat can quickly get tiring. In the accessibility settings menu, you can turn Cuff chat frequency from high (Frey and Cuff more or less run a podcast) to low (Frey and Cuff engage in a standard amount of video game banter) to minimal (Frey and Cuff are limited to story-essential chatter).

quote:

In the accessibility settings menu, under world settings, you can turn on automatic item gathering. This will make it so any crafting materials you’re near will instantly go into your inventory.

quote:

gameplay balance menu, you’ll see options that can reduce how much damage you receive, increase your stamina recovery speed, or extend how long toppled enemies remain immobile. (You can essentially unlock of these perks throughout normal gameplay.) But the setting to tweak is spell-switching slowdown.

quote:

If you also agree with the constituents of the 192 countries who primarily use the metric system, you can make this swap in the accessibility settings menu — it’s listed, for some reason, under the subtitle settings section.

Like drat, I will definitely support games going all in on that whole customizing game difficulty values and settings, it needs to be standard in every game of reasonable size going forward.

Oh yeah, met Moon, awkwardly left without touching anything, overseer's holos all changed to the neuron fly outline. It led me through the Shoreline to the Shaded Citadel, and then insisted I cross the bulk of the Citadel to get to 5P the back way (I guess? map's hard to read lol).
