characters do actually have some dialog like this, it just gets overwritten by the 'woah i leveled up' or 'good job alear' dialog if you're actually using them. which means the characters who are most likely to actually comment on anything are the ones you aren't using. its really bizarre.

Not only that, but if you go back to earlier chapters to do skirmishes on those maps, the later joiners also get lines like that!

There’s a lot of detail and character to this game (walking around maps and hearing comments, getting woken up by characters, etc) that’s basically hidden behind semi-randomized generic barks

I know the maps are harder but it feels waaaaay harder for my army to be positioned well to receive them. Like I can't really setup things to where my melee characters are setup to get supports from other people because of how dangerous being in attack range is. My teams end up way more spread out as everyone just tries to hide or take advantage of terrain. Granted it's also not helped by as the first people said, those initial supports are REALLY bad, and the post battle convos don't really help to characterize anyone, like until Yunaka I never felt like there was a character where I wanted to learn more about, even if her deal is incredibly obvious it's still nice that she has more going on. I am liking the post Brodia characters a lot more but yeah I do feel the post battle issues still exist.

Something I do have to give credit for is that the English VA cast do an excellent job when their characters are grieving. Not only Alear in chapter 3, but also Alcryst and Diamant when they have to fight their corrupted father later on. Just really great work in those scenes that immediately made me more invested in those characters.

Celine sorta refuses to turn out well for me so I haven't really been able to justify fielding her, which is unfortunate because I like her sorta-spellblade with Ignis gimmick thing. Alfred similarly has just gotten kinda crappy level ups, like when Amber joined his stats were higher than Alfred's across the board at a comparable level.

Mage Knight Anna's gonna have to be my spellblade instead. I just promoted her and handed her a Levin Sword so we'll see how that goes.

They really should have at least not massively downplayed the former effects of the weapon triangle, at least to unbroken foes.

Also Sommie is my new favorite Pokémon. And I think these people are all weirdos but I’m probably gonna support grind a lot after I beat the game to see all their weirdo conversations.

My problem is actually that Louis got too good and too many enemies are just ignoring him to the point of literally just running up to him and standing there if I have a 1 tile chokepoint. They won't bother attacking if they do 0 damage (and are not a dagger user, who will attempt to apply poison even if the attack does 0).

I think character paralogues might have been nice to have. I get why the paralogues focus on the emblems this time around, but I did like the 3H thing where sometimes a pair of characters would share a paralogue, and not always a pair you'd expect (Mercedes and Caspar, for example). I imagine the characters would be better received if they'd done like 12 paired character paralogues instead of 12 emblem paralogues, but again I understand the emblems are kinda the focus this time around so I see why they did it how they did.

They could've done paired character/emblem paralogues though, thinking about it.

Celine is cursed with slightly sub-coinflip growths in basically everything and her unique class is designed as a hybrid character instead of a focused specialist, which is typically FE code for "bad". I'm giving her the old college try on my maddening run and she hasn't fallen off the cliff yet but I'm concerned it's going to happen simply because her growths are spread pretty thin.

Has anyone experimented with halberdiers in Engage? I'm toying with sending someone down that road - probably Alfred - but their kinda lovely bases are a bit of a turnoff and I'm not sure how their class skill functions.

Harrow

I found a Youtuber doing a Maddening playthrough where it seems their strategy was to make almost everyone into a Backup class and give them Dual Assist+, so now every single attack anyone does has like six or more chain attacks coming in beforehand. I have no idea if it's as effective as it looks but it certainly looks fun, if nothing else.

Obligatum VII posted:

Yeah actually that would've been cool. Also would've been a good opportunity to showcase the "secondary" royals like Celine or Alcryst more, having them feature in the paralogue for an emblem from their country.

If it's your first maddening run growths are fixed, which makes balanced growths actually pretty good. If you're sitting at 40-50%ish in everything, then its basically like you get a perfect level every other level.

to be fair part of the issue there is that 3H was an evolving situation while in Engage's plot even if characters did react to the plot they wouldnt really have much to say but 'boy i hope we get the bad guys' outside of the chapter 10-11 situation, and maybe one or two other instances. in 3H's case they could react to things like having to fight other students, what edelgard might want/why they're siding with edelgard even after everything's going down, etc, but in Engage's case it's pretty clear what the bad guy wants (the rings, to do evil with) and why they're with you (because the bad guy is evil). So even if Engage had that stuff, I don't know if it'd really add much depth. Most of the cases where a character could have something interesting to say, they actually do.

There is some locational dialog and a surprising amount of it, like if you talk to Celine throughout the solm arc she gets increasingly fed up with the heat, but it's not exactly deep, more just amusing.

The post-battle chatter is usually amusing but it often gets overwritten or the character doesn't show up after that particular map, which is frustrating. If they had made it fixed who showed up in the exploration and always gave them their little blurb I think people would have been a lot happier.

Yeah but she's crawling out of some pretty mediocre bases and it's usually more beneficial to have 15 mag than to have 10 str and 10 mag. Being kind of decent at everything instead of really good at one or two things just tends to end up with a unit that can't double, dodge, take hits, or reliably kill.

The wise strategist fears not the unit that has 50 stat points split across 5 stats, they fear the unit that has 50 stat points dumped into str and def.

its kind of weird because the rings are largely in countries that suit them (celica to firene, land of peace and flowers, roy to brodia, land of strong heroes, ike to solm, land of practical free spirits, etc) but it feels completely coincidental.

I get not wanting to have the rings be super, super important but I think even 'this country was formed by people who had a strong bond with this emblem' would work. the status of emblems as like, religious figures or just some dudes who existed once is also left a bit vague.

Roy's a scrub tho. Meanwhile Ike actively talks about being swole. And if you needed someone to be practical free spirits, you have lyn, from a land of practical free spirits.

Engage probably won't have the longevity of ~*~discourse~*~ that 3H has but people do seem charmed by the characters, which is nice.

I was one of the biggest haters in this thread and at least up to chapter 10 my impression is mostly that a. the advertising for this game did it no favors, it made think it'd have a tone that's entirely like the scene where you meet Alcryst, instead of that kind of thing being the exception and not the rule. The plot/tone are still simple and lighter than 3H, but the whole package isn't that extra. b. the first few characters aside from Yunaka are the worst and that's where a lot of the advertising is on, once you get to Brodia the character quality massively improves and it's a bold move to put the worst part of your cast first but  Alear is also a surprisingly good character, though that might just be that she's the designated straight woman amongst the weirdos and she immediately won me over by feeling how I do towards them. (Why can't any of you be normal!?)

As one of the biggest haters it's definitely managed to win me over, though supports still feel really spare and despite having seen at least a decent amount of C supports, very few drew me in to want to see more of the characters. At least I don't feel the need to be insane and get them all like Awakening.

I think a big part of what makes the map design pop in this game is that it is clearly designed with the rewind button in mind, which lets the enemy pull outright nasty tricks mid-battle without forcing the player to reset.

The Emblem Paralogues have been some of the most fun I've had in the series. I don't know if they scale with your level, but I've been doing them as soon as they unlock and they've (mostly) all required a ton of effort and thinking. Plus the music is fun, nostalgia-bait and all. Super good!

I know people can be sticklers on the time rewind mechanics but I really like it. Not just as a casual thing, but I really like just playing like a dipshit for the first couple turns and then using the time rewind to see if I can dig myself out of it within 10 attempts. Campy fun is exactly what it is. And the few moments so far when the story actually tries to be serious land pretty well, though I think a lot of that is on the quality of the acting in those scenes. The acting can be kinda flat sometimes, but when things get serious, everyone steps up really well.

The time rewinding is great and I'm glad it seems to be here to stay. At first I thought it might sorta invalidate Classic mode, but it really doesn't. I still can't sacrifice units for short-term gain without losing them permanently. All time rewinding has done is make me more likely to take risks or try crazy strats without potentially wasting 30+ minutes replaying a map, and that just makes the game more fun.

I know I play much more aggressively in the games with time rewinding than without because I know I can try something wild without being punished too harshly if/when it fails.
