quote:"(CIG developers) feel they are making the community's game rather than the company's game." Given that it has been explained at great length that Chris's vision is to make the game he wants to play (STOP LAUGHING HE'S VERY SERIOUS ABOUT WANTING TO PLAY STAR CITIZEN) and not a game that the faithless, complaining, overly-entitled community wants to play, those devs had better learn to shut their mouths and do what they're told, or they should start stealing some office supplies, because they aren't going to be at CIG for long. On the other hand, maybe this is just what the community needed, a fresh excuse for why it's taking so long. It's those drat rogue devs who keep trying to do what the community wants, instead of what Chris's vision requires. If only the community had shut their loving mouths, stopped wanting a game, and just sent money to CIG like they were supposed to, Star Citizen would be finished by now!

It was a great game, but ultimately mismanaged by Braben, because all the space game nerd legends are idiots. Odyssey expansion is quite new, but even most E:D fans consider it a dud. So SC should really set their aims a lot higher at this point. And I'm pretty sure the E:D flight model beats SC flight model still.

Dwesa posted:That's the only thing in which SC might be considered 'better' than ED. Now they should compare space combat. Or exploration of galaxy. Or trading. Or customization of ships. Or online store prices. Or release dates. It's not better, because there were 30 seconds of canned animations for the SC player before they could actually get into doing whatever they were trying to do on the ground. Even X3 gives you an option to disable the "wormhole" jump gate animation because if you've seen it once, do you want every other time you go through the gates to take 7-8 seconds?

As an explorer in E:D, I don't like how planets look in Odyssey. Some kind of grainy pixel pattern now covers the planets. I haven't gotten used to the on-foot part, a whole new game that I have not taken much time to learn since it was introduced. I like that switching between cockpit, car or walking in E:D is quick. The flight model of E:D gives me a nice sense of mass and inertia, that changes with the size and specs of the ship I fly. And how easy or hard it is to land in a small spot on a planet.

I'm also intensely uninterested in the whole Thargoid incursion thing. Hey I've just thought, maybe E:D's not for me? Anyone know any good space-related games where the whole space bit is pretty much a sideshow now and I can just buy hotdogs and rubber band my way to crashing out of the game a lot?

I can see the work environment at CI being really good You get to work all day with no pressure to deliver, just loving around with the engine or an editor. When the big boss wants something, just throw together a POC of whatever is not in the game, call it Tier 0 and groundbreaking and send it over. Nobody is going to push you to do Tier 1, besides you can blame entitled backers for wanting finished stuff, so job is done. Big boss will approve or reject your work, whatever, no difference, and gently caress off again. Go back to learning, developing your skills and padding your resume while on company time. When the big boss is back, repeat

JugbandDude posted:I can see the work environment at CI being really good I'm not sure I can think of a company that would let a team work on a river auto material for half a decade and counting, or decide to build race tracks for your barely functional crysis cars in what's supposed to be a space game. Everything that piss boy thinks it's a good thing is actually a traffic management failure, but due to a lack of experience in being able to see how badly the critical path is being handled vs ancillary extras the team can make because they are out of their depth... It is what it is. It's also cute for new devs to get involved in a project that's just spinning its wheels. It might be cool at first that you get paid just to mess around, but after a while it gets old and depressing. You're not getting good guidance from management, your supervisors are probably just as bad off as you for experience, meetings are full of people proud that they made more high poly models and 8K textures, but they can't show you good in the game because of problems... And I think over time of you making next to nothing while the bosses are on an infinite vacation and tooling around in new cars and mansions it starts to take a hit on morale and you start to feel taken advantage of and that you really are just screwing over innocent people. Not everyone is a con artist and not everyone wants to be part of a thing that seems to exist just because it's a money tree for the c-team.

It's also real stupid anytime anyone uses Chris as any kind of defense in "making the game he wants to play". He never plays the game. It's a dumb argument. The one time he did play it years ago seemed like the first time he ever saw it, and was surprised by lots of things. He even called things out he didn't like. Like dude, that's your game, you should have said no to that item when it was proposed or in development or when you saw it in QA. But you didn't. Because you don't care. The only thing he wants is the money. Everything else is pretty much a lie. The exact reason people are making race tracks and rivers infinitely is because he doesn't care if a game is ever made. I'm not even sure how much he cares about sq404 at this point either. If people are really concerned about bedsheet deformation and ai reacting dynamically in a variety of ways to other ai trying to play arcade games and use the right fork for a mess hall scene... there's nothing there and no true vision. The things that cig seems to be worried about most are the things a player can look at and not interact with. Why is that? If you want to make a comparison to say, Kojima who is also kind of weird about this kind of thing... he does stuff you can look at very well but he also has a huge focus on things the player can interact with as well. And of course for some reason Kojima can also make a new company and deliver complete games in less time than star citizen. He also has a weird fetish for Hollywood, but he's also a game nerd and deeply involved with making sure his team is working on his vision. I'm sure that when you visit kojima's studio, people there are razor-focused on making the end product and meetings are very direct and result and goal oriented. You don't have devs just inventing busy work for themselves. Not to say they can't be creative because I'm sure they can, but Kojima is weighing the value add vs the time to build and approving it.

The Titanic posted:It's also real stupid anytime anyone uses Chris as any kind of defense in "making the game he wants to play". I agree with this mostly, except the not caring part. I like to believe Chris cares about this game, but it's been so long in development that they created this monster of a structure to insulate him from the harsh reality. So you have 500+ people creating bullshit reports and art deliverables, then throwing his away so he can play approver and provide his feedback about the color of a specific pixel. He absolutely loves that role, where he sits pretty and does basically nothing, just providing his visionary input. If anybody asks him "well, have you tried this or that feature in the game?", he will just make up some bullshit excuse like "well Dave is telling me that feature is fine" or "Dave is telling me that feature depends on feature Y" or "I don't have time to play myself, too much work!" Basically he thinks he cares about the game, but he is in fact delusional.

I have a love/hate relationship with video games getting ultra realistic. I like that the tech can do it and that the character looks basically like a real person. But I have no internet in hurting real people and don't want to do it in a video game either. I like cartoony characters that die in a poof of smoke rather than beg for mercy in a pool of fidelity blood.

Which didn't quite pull me as much as such things used to do. It's been ten years since I backed the E:D kickstarter, and some three years since I played it seriously. I'm getting older, and I doubt that any new game will captivate me as much as WoW and E:D did. Dwesa posted:Chuds and terminally online nerds enjoy simple masculine things - like pointless gore. Sex and nudity can be only shown in simple context - like hentai games. According to them, it's not meant to show intimacy or non-ideal human bodies. Anything that would make these people stop and think is despised and is "woke". I genuine loved LDR season 1. Season 2 felt like whoever did it had no idea what made 1 so good and it was utterly terrible. Season 3 was better than 2 but still didn't shine a light anywhere near 1. However they did make the cyberpunk anime which I enjoyed much much more than I thought I would, and it had nudity in it but that's what made it all pull together. It was great, and it also had wonton gore in it as well but it was anime gore. I'm fine with anime gore.
