That said I agree McDavid should be higher.

And I say Jamie Benn should be in the top 10. You can follow me on mastadon and rumble.

is Nieto still fast? Avs could use a fast 4th liner

Even if Nieto sucks, Avs gave up a guy that cleared waivers and a 29-year old journeyman d lol.

Merkley is still young too and has the draft pedigree, not sure I see why the Sharks made this trade?

The only jersey I own is a Matt Nieto Avs one because I once made a bet with a Sharks fan back in January 2018 that the Avs would win the game and that Nieto would score, and if that happened she would have to buy me a Nieto sweater, but if the Sharks won I'd buy her a sweater of her choice (it was her birthday so I made my side of the bet harder) and then it happened.

Kaut was selected 5 picks ahead of Merkley in the 2018 draft, so their draft pedigree is essentially the same at least, though given that forwards usually break into the lineup earlier Merkley has better upside.

you would think it would be prime dog days of summer content to fire off daily and drive traffic. the fact they're doing it now makes me wonder how desperate things are getting

Merkley was also a notorious talented head case so there's the "we can fix him" factor making him more attractive as a trade target.

Merkley requested a trade a few weeks ago after being benched. Two years ago he was disappointed he didn't make the team after camp, then he had an underwhelming year in the AHL. Last year he fixed some offseason conditioning issues, was brought up for a stint and scored his first NHL goal in his first game in front of his family (cool), then had an underwhelming year in the NHL/AHL. This year he's been stashed for yet another underwhelming year in the AHL -- was even removed from the PP. It was the same story every year, we want him to go down to the AHL and dominate, but he never took a step forward. Plays like a slower Karlsson (both skating and processing) with similar defensive warts. Today, his vision and transition play are genuinely upper-tier NHL level. But I have a friend who watches the AHL games and says he never consistently looked super special. He'd hit people with like 5 insane passes on a PP, no one would finish, then he'd disappear for the next few games. Two months ago he mentioned "Merkley, I dunno, I think that experiment is almost over."

Byron Bader still loves him for his otherworldly junior's numbers: https://twitter.com/ByronMBader/status/1572599199283449858?s=20&t=F3inlzN9ivQ1TzDpiaGKHg
Some source of The Athletic had speculated that Merkley's trade value was exactly this, one for one for another underperforming former first rounder. He's an RFA this year, so I don't know how much control the team has left. I think the trade request was the ultimate spark. Probably selling low, but the current regime didn't draft him, he doesn't want to be here, ok.

I'm just pissed Doug Wilson blew so many first round picks on giant d-men who can't play hockey real good but Are Big over the last 20 years, then literally the first time we draft the undersized guy with skill over the big guy (K'Andre Miller was picked next), we miss.

Yes, I'd say that's right. Merkley was always high risk, high reward. Kaut's 173 AHL games are a huge red flag to me -- non-fighter NHL forwards do not cook in the AHL nearly that long. Nieto isn't a blazer anymore, but he's above average. His value is on the PK. Sharks have had an elite PK over the last two years despite having average-to-poo poo goaltending, and Nieto is a big part of that. Kind of a who cares from the Sharks end, Avs come out on top by getting a useful UFA PKer who's familiar with the team and the prospect with bigger upside.

The simple way she picks up the puck somehow feels slicker than the typical Michigan.

Final words about Merkley, there's flashes of high end talent for sure:

The pass to Vlasic in the second clip was no look. But it also shows my problem with him, he'll beat his man but hang onto the puck way too long, it's his go to move and he ends up on the redline killing the play all the time.

that Athletic chart is like Skip Bayless poo poo. i think it’s designed to be infuriating. they rated Iginla above Chris Pronger. there’s never been a hockey game played where you would take Jarome Iginla over Chris Pronger.

sakic/yzerman being ahead of McDavid/Messier is similarly insane. they spent the entire Scott Stevens article talking about concussions and wrote nothing about Doug Gilmour and the babysitter. incredible.
