Today was A Good Day. I got to drive a car that's been on my wish list since I was about eight and saw it in a Pocket Book of the 20th Century's Greatest Cars. 1949 Lancia Tipo 438 Aprilia bis The first saloon car to be designed in a wind tunnel (with a drag figure not seen regularly on cars of its class until the 1970s), one of the first all-steel unitary construction bodies, four-wheel independent suspension (classic Lancia sliding pillars at the front, torsion bars at the back), inboard rear brakes, a 1.5-litre narrow-angle V4 engine with hemi-head and a single overhead camshaft. Glorious to drive - dynamically very close to an Alfasud or a small 1990s Peugeot, with the same supple but tightly-controlled ride. Overall it was like driving around in a marine chronometer; absolutely no sense of 'lost motion' in either the running gear, the body or the controls. Everything was very sharp, accurate, smooth and precise. From the clutch to the window winders. Lancia in its heyday was an amazing company and the Aprilia is easily 20, if not 30, years ahead of its time. The snag (beyond the asking price being several times more than I've spent on every car I've ever owned, combined...) is that at 6ft I am far too tall to comfortably drive an Aprilia. Like all Italian cars made before about 1985 it seems to have been designed for someone who is 5ft tall, with a 3ft torso, 2ft legs and the arms of a large octopus. My head was crammed into the headlining and my knees were on about the same level as my lungs. Oh well, no I know that if I win the lottery and want to buy a highly advanced pre-war European car it'll have to be a Citroen Traction Avant, since I know I can fit in them. What a shame...

Godzilla back at The Mountain. In the Combined Sedans support race for the Bathurst 12hr, this 1170hp RWD R32, while crashing out over the top, managed to set a new speed record down Conrod Straight of 327km/h. Ahhh yes Conspiracy Against Motor Sport strikes again. FYI CAMS was the previous name for Motorsport Australia. It was changed to seem more like the only official governing body because the alternative - AASA was gaining ground (mostly due to AASA not being run by a bunch of fuckwits and who actually were interested in helping clubs and associations) and as well the name CAMS was so poisioned for being such a bunch of dickheads for decades. I worked with both as a Event Director and lordy AASA was so much less obnoxious.

I find it kinda odd that a lot of the marc cars builds have appeared in combined sedans rather than the 12hr which is part of what they where built for. I do get that it's probably cheaper by far to run in a support category instead of the full 12hr race.
