I guess I'm late to the 30 Rock chat, but I find myself disliking its triumphant lib energy. It's competently crafted lib show that ultimately just wants credit for being a self-aware. It knows GE and the TV industry sucks. Jokes and entire plots are written to handwring that. But ultimately every rear end in a top hat is supposed to our rear end in a top hat. Even the literal network boss. Unlike It's Always Sunny, these assholes are people who possess power and have careers that millions covet. And we know IRL the people who made 30 Rock, including the writers and stars have this bizarre embattled mindset. Every defense I've seen is "but it's funny". Sure. I checked out after one season while I was still quite lib-brained. I won't lie and say I wasn't bothered at all at the show's pathological need to punch at wokescolds, but I felt there was something more wrong about it. Like it's saying "we know we suck, but what are you gonna do about it?" which kind of feels like the official GenX lib slogan since 2016.

Again from a socialist point of view I think sex is the best because you don't have to buy anything or go anywhere or subscribe to anything or whatever like you could have two people who are incredibly poor can't afford a night at the movies or a night out at a bar but they can have lots of fun doing sex stuff, totally free. And drat so much of Tina Fey's comedy is that people who do sex and even worse, enjoy sex, are bad and stupid. It's like Stephen King and fat people

Koirhor posted:what the gently caress Universe leans hard into the Battlestar reboot feel in that it works great out the gate with blind panic and how to survive in the unknown, but then collapses into religious symbolism and mystery box bullshit SG-1 and Atlantis are great. the one thing that's awesome about them is the writing is pretty consistent and plot holes minimal, so there's usually an answer for wtf just happened. On that note just started Farscape and it feels reeeeeeeally sloppy. They're playing fast and loose with the science and seem to forget some things and focus way too much on others. I'm hoping it picks up once the cast gels, I know Scorpio doesnt show up until near the end of season 1 but thinking of seeing what eps I can skip until then. 30 Rock and even moreso Parks and Rec were written at the creating of a wave. That generation of liberal woman really perceived themselves to be at the End of History, with only slight improvements needed in the march of progress (their own professional attainment, given form in Hillary Clinton). It’s a show for Pussy Hats right before the wave broke. Kimmy Schmidt is sort of working through Trump while retaining optimism and girl power, the triumphant march of cultural liberalism, Girls 5Eva is about taking that L, but with the belief that Biden means it’s all over and behind them now. All three are funny.

The first two of the three were still mostly before White Feminism got the "Girls" backlash. The backlash itself was quite milquetoast, and only shifted power towards BIPOC libs with their own problems. But I think Fey and Poehler benefited greatly from emerging at a very specific time in liberal culture's life cycle.

Pepe Silvia Browne posted:Robert Downey Jr. doing blackface to mock actors going to extreme to play roles they think will get them an Oscar was an extremely risky thing to do, because it is problematic. And that risk still paid off and it's funny. It's also literally called out in the movie that Hollywood will do basically anything to stick a marketable face in a role rather than just cast an actual black person Best part is the ending where his character reverts to other various roles he's played before finally becoming himself like a dying shapeshifter. Xaris posted:not yet. it got a big hype bump because a) everyone expected it to be some boring dumb toy-cash-in romcom when it was first announced, b) the trailer was like the first trailer in years that didn't spoil the whole movie and was weird as hell with post-apocalyptic babies smashing dolls leaving people far more curious and wanting to find out more, c) simu liu and other ppl have hyped it up, and d) it definitely has a weird but unique aesthetic. basically expectations were in the sewer and they came out with something that was promising far beyond the sewer-level everyone was thinking And this whole thing reminded me of something and now lol if Barbie ends up the new My Little Pony But at this point I think trying to take down cynical consumerism is the most pointless thing in the world, consumerism won total victory a long time ago and frankly literally every other problem is bigger. There's way more fun to be had in exploring people's relationships with their dolls.

oh good, the flashbacks were nearly meaningless and needed fleshing out in the first few eps. still apprehensive about there being like 13 hours of content out and there isn't a space ship battle yet or w/e

I'm real curious to see what the Netflix version is like when it comes out. It's definitely taking a weird step to adapt a 300 page book into a 25 hour series (or whatever the episodes are roughly 45 minutes), but it's still somehow compelling.
