A quick look at a machine translated version of the JP transcript shows, yes, they do indeed make the same jokes here. The biggest difference is that the JP name puns are completely different from the EN name puns (cause they have to be), but, yes, it turns out the JP writers are the complete quirky weirdos that came up with this nonsense. Although even in the name pun case, the EN localizers took some of the same pun ideas or tried to derive it from the same name tonally. Some examples of names: -Phoenix Wright is Naruhodo Ryuuichi (Naruhodo meaning "I get it" or "I understand", and Ryuuichi just being a generic last name). -Maya was derived from the orgiinal JP name of Mayoi, which is surprisingly not a pun, but supposed to mean "True Night", sort of a tone setting name for the 2nd case. -Edgeworth is the same pun as the JP name of Mitsurugi, "Edge of a Sword". The version I heard is that the Japanese series' name is straightup "turnabout attorney" and Ryuuichi means "dragon," which the translation folded into "Phoenix," a creature known for its ability to return after death in order to have the mythological creature and the turnabout theme in the title, while "Wright" is obviously a near-direct translation of "Naruhodo." Edgeworth is obvious, though I appreciate that everyone knows Miles is a posh boy name, and I'd venture "Fey" is the tone-setting part of Maya's name in the English version. It's quite well done.

In fact I touched on it myself briefly when we first learned that Hammer was the one in the Steel Samurai costume. It almost seems as if... We had a prompt like this one earlier in the trial, where I said that "obviously" we need to present evidence, because why would the game offer the option if we weren't meant to use it? However we just went through a prompt for evidence about motive, and only came up with something that showed that Hammer had a motive, not Vasquez. Somehow I don't think showing the photo again is going to cut it here. They worked way too hard to set up Edgeworth as an unrepentant single-dimensional amoral rear end in a top hat in case 2, only to now flip and work on showing him as a multidimensional figure here. I honestly wonder at times how the writing for this game went.

I think the game kinda cheats with the almost back to back do you have evidence for Vasquez's motive" questions when the answer are "yes I do" immediately followed by "no I don't, Hammers was the one out for blood". Incidentally I think Oldbag realized more or less what transpired during the investigation section. I'm not going to check the exact words, but she said something like 'poor Hammers, you did wrong, may your soul find peace' when Nick got evidence to her it was Hammers in the suit.

Also it's a story with only a handful of chapters; there's not really any room for one trial where Edgeworth is kind of scummy but less scummy and nothing else major happens, he kind of has to do the face turn the second time you face him.

Also doesn't help they did not come up with the idea of making this a trilogy until after the first game was developed, so the first game is designed to be a very tight storyline. Apparently the story goes that Shinji Mikami (who was the writer/director Shu Takumi's boss at the time) gave the team that idea for a trilogy while Shu Takumi was on vacation under assumption that Ace Attorney was done. To put things in context, the bonus case they added in the DS re-release is roughly the length of the entire original game. The characters were once again great - Will Powers was an adorable client, Dee Vasquez was an absolutely marvelous villain, and everyone in between was interesting and memorable in very different ways. Except maybe "that assistant," who even the game's writers can't remember is named Penny half the time. The case itself felt like it was about a day too long. The first day of trial and the following investigation sequence both felt like filler and just dragged on. But unlike last episode, this episode wrapped up with a fantastic trial day, complete with Edgeworth bailing us out, out of nowhere, and then Phoenix landing the finishing blow by himself for once! And the second day of trial had the incredible twist, revealing that Hammer was the one in the Steel Samurai costume the whole time, and throwing me into a stupor! We also once again tripped up our villain on a line where she was telling the truth - but it revealed more than she thought. It was in the second testimony instead of the first, but still an excellent mystery clue reveal. The overall writing for this case in general was superb, really. Music: Jingle - It Can't End Here  We're not done yet! Episode 4 is ahead of us, and it looks like we have Edgeworth and some new faces! One of whom looks... a lot like Edgeworth? Does Edgeworth have some daddy issues?

At last, the time has come.  Yeah, Turnabout Samurai is a drat fine case overall, despite some minor hiccups. Maya being added to the mix of characters Phoenix interacts with does a lot to make the investigative work way more fun.
