Seems to me that would achieve the political dream of getting everything in the north to gently caress off so I eagerly await this being in the Tory manifesto

parliamentary positions have a hard time recruiting people in a lot of places these days the position is one of high visibility and responsibility and not a lot of power. also if you said something bad in public once it will come back on you. also you're subject to completely inscrutable and often unpredictable standards. if you step out of any number of lines, suddenly a thousand people are incandescently angry at you, personally and specifically. if you have a bad debate, even people who agree with you will be mad at you. the only people who really want to be parliamentarians these days are 1) complete weirdos (raab &c), 2) people with extremely strong and rather boutique convictions (corbyn etc), 3) the entirely shameless types who see it as a career (rees-mogg etc., this is probably the largest group), 4) the independently rich who see it as a path to celebrity and/or their destiny one really does want a different set of people to be parliamentarians, but the structures are set up in such a way as to filter out basically any normal person and you're left with mostly vat-grown freaks and psychopaths

So the firefighters took a loss here then? Below inflation this year, and below inflation again next year. How is this good for them.

happyhippy posted:So the firefighters took a loss here then? Because the previous offer was 2%, and believe it or not but firemen generally don't like striking. The issue has always been the government weren't willing to compromise, not the unions. Personally I'd vote to reject anything under 10% but I get why they are willing to take this
