Is there a compelling reason why, after 20 years, the qz's are based where the infected are? Joel says the mycelium even grow for miles underground, later he says there are virtually no infected out in the countryside (where all the arable farmland is). Bill and Frank live in an out of town idil, with no infected problems. Seems a touch odd that nobody, in 20 years, saw what they had and thought, hmm I want something like that.

No sane group of people would look at the qz and want to go there. It's literally nazitown right in zombie infection central. With severe likelihood of oppression and/or zombification. Where do they get their food? After 20 years?

I'm not a game player, so perhaps there are thriving communities well away from the old cities? The likelihood of getting fungus brain seems to diminish the further you get from, you know, the infected. Last I checked North America is huge with lots of empty parts in the middle bit, where they used to grow all the food.
Bill and Frank lived a comfortable life because of their connection to a QZ through Joel and Tess. We've heard there's some manufacturing in Atlanta, and the fact that a QZ in Boston can make use of those resources means FEDRA has a functioning national infrastructure. That's huge. I think the QZs do offer some clear benefits, even though their location is pretty sub-optimal based on inertia mainly.

I don't know what else is out there, but it makes sense that QZs are the most known feature of post-apocalyptic America. They've been there since the apocalypse, so it's an institution that everyone understands. If you found yourself wandering the wastes fleeing from raiders and the odd infected, you might figure a fascist fortress surrounded by zombies is at least predictably oppressive.

Without the structure of a shared society, humans cannot trust each other. Seeing a stranger is going to be terrifying if there's a 50% chance they'll just shoot you on sight, and so you're going to be more and more likely to shoot them on sight first, making the general odds even worse. You need some sort of shared understanding to diffuse this situation. "Laws" or "social norms". Those are really hard to set up and as far as we know FEDRA is the only group with any reach that has them. They still might kill you for bullshit reasons, but their reasons just have to be a bit less bullshit than "I want your stuff" for people to be more safe around them, and around each other under their authority.

Neo Rasa posted:

To answer your question about the game, that's a yes, the game is very very generally a road trip tour of the different types of communities that would form in the aftermath.
This is kind of a nitpick, but if you read the post you were quoting more carefully, they were not actually asking a question about the game that needed to be answered. They were speculating about the world in general.

It's like if someone said, "I haven't played the game, maybe Joel is going to die next episode?" That's not someone asking you to tell them if Joel dies next episode or not.

This show is really cool, and from the perspective of someone who hasn't played the games myself, it's got a wonderful sense of discovery and potential at this point. Who knows what lies around the next corner? Well, some of you all apparently do know. It's not a huge deal, but all else being equal I'd rather that rhetorical question not be answered in this, the non-game player thread, even in spoiler tags.

And like, I get the instinct to talk about cool things you know. It was really hard for me to keep quiet about people speculating in the Expanse thread when I had read the books. But especially in works where there's been a lot of effort put into the presentation of a setting, it's worth just letting it unfold.

In fact the imagery was so strong, that in TLOU2, you come across an environment that is inhabited long term by people, but even that place retains scars of past infections by the fungus. That was forcibly burnt out and restored for human habitation. It's a tiny patch of texture and normal mapping, but it was a wonderful worldbuilding detail that I hardly ever see mentioned.

Which environment is this? I can't recall.

Yeah come on. If you wanna talk spoilers, whether its directly, behind a spoiler tag, or just "cleverly" alluded to , just go to the other drat thread come on. Why are you even in posting in this thread if you've played the games? Your posts are gonna be skewed merely by knowing what's coming, like I saw people talking about the gay porn mags scene and being disappointed it wasn't in episode 3 and then whoops it was in episode 4. I'm sure there was a moment in episode 1 or 2 where Joel has his torch out and seemed to be looking at spores (or maybe just dust) in the beam, but clearly wasn't concerned about them. So maybe it was just a nod to the game, like yes there are some spores about but it's not part of the story we're telling.
Or it was just a dusty old room.

Ellie mentions "giant infected that explode and shoot spores" in episode 2, but it's treated more as an urban legend than a fact. That seems to leave the door open, anyhow.

There is also something under the floor they are worried about. I'm guessing it's just a big cluster of the cordyceps, which will signal to all the other infected that people are here, if/when someone touches it. Also makes me wonder just how far they are linked and if infected can travel hundreds of miles to come help, or if they need to be somewhere within the city.

Part of me is hoping it's some kind of cordyceps Nydus worm and hundreds and hundreds of infected come spewing out of it.

Maybe that was just a joke for the people that have played the game. I'm sure there were some pretty ridiculous bosses.

I did notice a few lingring shots of spores - I remember one in the first episode when Joel is just pushing a dresser to the side in his room to get at a stash. And yeah I think there was another one with torchlight. Maybe they were trying to create some uncertainty.

The biggest reason that people aren’t simply leaving nazivilles for literal green acres is: they’ll get picked off and killed or just die because they don’t know how to live off the land, let alone set up ongoing farms.

If you had a big group of people maybe then you could survive for awhile, but you’ll need shelter and protection. And rules. And then the nazis.

I thought Bryan's desperate "I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO..." as he was dying was the most genuine, believable part of his panicked plea for mercy. I can totally buy that if you have a group consisting of young kids like Bryan, who grew up in a world where society is basically over, and the other half are adults who grew up learning to live in our world with grocery stores and voting and a postal system and gas stations, then basically nobody would have any idea what the gently caress to do. Like, Kathleen is the best leader they can find in Kansas City. The world is a massive shitshow and people don't know how to handle that.

In the game, yeah.

In the show, the outbreak starts in September 2003.

In the real timeline, SARS wasn’t contained till 2004. We could speculate that in the show’s timeline, it breaks containment, but with the vast population decline and disruption brought by the cordyceps pandemic, it was unable to sustain itself.

The bit in Jakarta with the mycologist has references to SARS in the background. I remember there being a poster that references a vaccine for SARS. I don't think a SARS 1 vaccine ever made it out of animal trials before the pandemic fizzled out on it's own. (By successful non-pharmaceutical interventions like masking and contact tracing.)

When watching the episode I wasn't sure if that was a mistake, or a deliberate choice.

Part of the reason we had COVID vaccines so "quickly" is that SARS and MERS opened the door to mRNA vaccine research. When both viruses fizzled out instead of becoming widespread, they shelved the research because it was - at the time - too costly to continue for no reason.

Also, the mycologist and epidemiologist were right about there being "no medicine." The strongest anti-fungal medications we have give compounding pharmacies nightmares even for single use cases and the compounds themselves make chemotherapy drugs look like homeopathic remedies - there's a pharmacist in the PYF chem thread who talked about preparing it once a while back. The medicines used to combat dangerous fungal infections are as dangerous to patients as they are to the fungi they're trying to kill.
