This isn't me trying to poo poo on you here but I'm so glad I have USAA cause anytime I've ever had a problem, my retired Navy Captain dad calls them up and pulls rank and it actually works with them. I've only ever had to do it twice though and it was because they didn't think I was his kid because of how I was talking to them as a young rear end in a top hat.

Sorry guys, very much posted in the wrong thread (ANGRYPOSTING GRRRR, thought I was in the regular chat thread), but yeah, televiper summed it up. My representative (agent) kept reassuring me "corporate has sent it to <name at dealership>", and I was forwarding him emails from the bank with the loan and reminding him "<name at dealer> is with the DEALER, the BANK needs proof, they needed proof before I took delivery... I still don't have any kind of proof aside from a card stating liability only". I don't know what the gently caress happened. My agent is nothing but 5 stars on Google and Yelp, and aside from one exception, my interactions with him have been great. I'm assuming he's relatively new to the insurance game (otherwise he wouldn't be a captive agent to State Farm... you usually get your feet wet as a captive agent unless you manage to wind up with a lot of clients). I don't want to make it rain hellfire and brimstone on the guy, but this is one case where hellfire and brimstone will be happening to someone. I've pulled the Karen "dude, don't make me switch agents" line with him exactly once when there was a fuckup with my renters insurance (which resulted in my apt complex backdating their "if you're not gonna get insurance, we'll get liability for you at 2-3x the market rate" policy), and apparently that alone was enough for a decent reshuffling of his office. And that wasn't 100% his fault - on my lease renewal, they changed the address to send proof of insurance; I forwarded it to him, but didn't sum it up, so it kept going to the old address. Still fighting Greyshit to get all of my money back out of that.. State Farm is also INCREDIBLY loving old school - getting an updated declarations page out of them anytime between renewals is damned near impossible. It takes a solid 1-2 weeks just to get an updated insurance card (though they'll send you a temp card). The fact that they even have a 24 hour customer service line now is shocking, but everything they sent me is still signed with my agent's name. Shockingly, anytime you take out a loan with collateral, the lender generally wants said collateral insured for its full value. I like my agent, I really do, but someone hosed up REALLY bad. Also, car is now in a detached, locked, alarmed (monitored alarm - notifies both police and my phone as well as a siren that I can hear from my apartment, plus a camera covering 95% of the room that also sends motion alerts to my phone) garage. The car may or may not have a GPS tracker on it from the dealer (I wouldn't be surprised if they added one - I haven't been up under the dash yet), but it's staying in there until this whole shitstorm gets fixed, with the battery disconnected. MetaJew posted:That loving sucks. Sorry dude. If I could get you on USAA I would. Their rates seem higher but I've never had those kinds of issues. I'm eligible for USAA, and I've had them before - but they're $$$$ compared to most others. I had one claim with them (comprehensive) and my rates skyrocketed, on one of the most common cars in the world (Honda Accord). I'll get quotes from them every year or two, but they're consistently one of the most expensive. USAA is amazing if you've retired from the military (esp if you retired as an officer). Pretty average to expensive if you're just related to someone who qualifies. They're a lot pickier about credit than most too. In my case, my dad served, but never signed up until he married my stepmother (he left the military in the mid 70s, married her in the late 90s). My stepmother's father retired as an Army officer, but she's riding on his membership... and thus, I'm riding on her membership. So basically the lowest level you can get with USAA for insurance. Edit: my agent is up early and already replying to my emails. From what he's saying, the dealer finance person represented themselves as being from the lending bank, not from the dealer, so he thought everything was fine. He's offering to reimburse expenses, but of course tow drivers don't give receipts and only take cash to drop something they've already hooked. According to him though, I've been covered with full coverage since the night I got the car - but the corporate call center only saw liability on it several hours ago. Ultimately, it's what corporate sees if there's a claim. I'm done dealing with this poo poo for now, I'm going to bed. E2: lol, he sent a declarations page showing liability only on the Lexry. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 13:08 on Feb 9, 2023 |

Even if you don't shop every year, it's a good exercise to do every 2-3. I found out the hard way that I was overpaying pretty drastically for several years when I just thought "Hmm, I should check on this" after I got a renewal notice. And it was literally, no joke, 50% higher than several others I checked with. My folks used the same insurance company and they too were getting hosed to the tune of well over $1k, if not $2k between their home and auto policies. Been with them for 15+ years at that point.

I had exorbitant rates with State Farm years ago after being with them for 15+ years. They refused to drop them or even look into it so I told them I was leaving and went to Geico. After a couple of years, my SF agent retired so a different one took over the accounts in the area and they called me claiming they could save me $ over Geico and with better coverage. They did, so I switched back. All this to say its 100% a good idea to check in and shop around every once in a while as mentioned above. Solid advice.

With only 1 data point (your existing policy) you really are blind. Get at least 2 more and you can probably get a better feel for "market" price for your circumstances. Then you can decide if it's worth the $$ to change and possibly erase any long term (IE: no claim/first claim waiver benefits) you might have. A good broker can actually have value here.

Do you lot in the US not have price comparison sites? We have some stupid ones like compare the market and go compare which give you a rough idea. It's always best to speak to them but would give you an upper limit for those specific companies in terms of cost.

I'll offer that while I really have had a good experience with Liberty Mutual, they literally told me once "call us every few years and ask if we can lower your premiums". This was after calling them about something else and finding out that randomly they could cut my monthly bill by hundreds of dollars. WTF.

Darchangel posted:Also, stop using State Farm. They suck. I'm not sure if I qualify for insurance via Costco, but more because I dropped down from executive member to gold star. Executive carries a lot of perks, but it wasn't worth the extra money for me (I don't shop in the store often enough to get a significant yearly rebate check). I have the membership mainly for the gas savings and the Citi credit card you can get (which is pretty great with the cashback rewards). Esurance wanted a shitload from me. State Farm has been the cheapest by a very large amount ($50-150/month less than anyone else). Not necessarily the easiest to work with, since nearly everything has to go through my agent (very little can be done online), but it did turn out to be a gently caress up with the bank (also State Farm's overnight call center, which seems to run on a PDP/11, can't access any changes made less than 30 days ago, so the CSRs couldn't see the Lexus). My agent even came by in person to apologize, said he did find one thing that hadn't been done right on his side (shouldn't have resulted in this, though), but said he'd spent a good amount of time on the phone with the bank ripping into them. It doesn't help that the finance officer at Autonation misrepresented herself to him as being with the bank. The bank holding the loan had sent me a notification about needing updated insurance "by 2/10". You might notice... this post is dated 2/10. They took action very early in the morning on 2/9 (tow truck showed up at like... 12:30am? 1am?). So they had to have ordered it on 2/8 - earlier than they said they would. I've already filed a complaint with the FTC, and as soon as I'm over this cold I'm going to go up to my credit union and see if I can refinance through them. The APR is absurd anyway (mainly bc of the age and mileage - my credit isn't great, but it's not nearly as bad as it used to be). I'm going to stick to the chat thread for any other stuff related to this fiasco, though not before I say gently caress Autonation.

loving Esurance. Dealing with their new bullshit was harder and more stressful than having our brand new car totaled, it took almost 4 months to get everything sorted with them and I literally had to call my agent's boss to get anything done because my agent was a loving ghost. I think I'm going to switch to Travelers. My FiL has been a customer for like 30 years and has nothing bad to say, but also because it's literally a quarter of what I pay Esurance for my 06 Scion, but with substantially better coverage. Insurance is a strange magic

I also cannot cross-shop, because literally the only underwriter writing policies in south Florida right now is Citizens, and Id rather suck-start a handgun than depend on citizens to reimburse me after a loss. Yeah, we haven't had to make a claim under Esurance, and that's really where you learn the quality of your insurer. I'm hoping I never have to, but that's what one always hopes. It does piss me off how much insurance companies can get away with, and thanks to the US legal system, it's even more expensive to go after them than just dealing with it. My experience with Progressive was dogshit though. Tired to rip me off on a homeowners policy that they canceled after a week and wanted to pocket half the annual premium.
