ASK ME ABOUT LUMBER

the north vietnamese had the ability and popular backing to make some serious sacrifices to win. those sacrifices were beyond either the US or the south vietnamese, because their projects were not seen as anywhere near as important or legitimate in the general consciousness.

why would russia deal with the UK, they'll just wait as the raw sewage lapping at their heels consumes the cursed isles.

after merkel, hollande, poroshenko and zelenzsky all came out and said minsk was just a way to buy time to rearm, russia is probably wary of any deals they make. they may deal with the US or just tell them to all to gently caress off because unless the west wants to send boots on the ground, they have no leverage. they're running out of weapons to send, their sanctions have hurt europe more than russia and in diplomatic terms, the rest of the world is moving closer to the eurasian bloc.

Yeah, but the West hasn't shown any urgency to re-arm? All I've seen reported is senior figures going: "Oh hey, we've already exhausted our meagre stockpiles scraping together whatever we can to send over to Ukraine and now the cupboard's bare. Oh well, what'cha gonna do "

There's been none of what I'd expect to see if the West was actually serious about defeating Russia through flooding Ukraine with hardware: no ramping up of production, no nationalisation of key defence industries (or even any major new contracts), no war taxes, no massive borrowing, no preparing the public for the major personal sacrifices they'll have to endure to make all of that happen... it's why I think that the West is secretly resigned to some sort of peace treaty later in the year where Ukraine concedes territory for peace and until then they're just doing what they can to make things a bit more favorable for Ukraine.

the West can't do anything of that poo poo but also the leadership either doesn't understand how hollowed out and financialised their industries and economy are or they don't care because they're playing the post-appointment consultancy game rather than the "govern effectively" game.

All right folks, it’s been fun modding this thread and cspam. But I’ve got a baby on the way and a new job, and I just don’t have the time, energy, or bandwidth to keep doing this effectively. On top of that it’s becoming increasingly clear that I’m out of step with what most of cspam’s users want. So it’s time for me to step down as a mod - probably past time, in fact. Thanks to everyone who made this a fun thread and forum to moderate. I hope this awful war ends soon.

May you all continue to be gay for Putin.

yeah, for all the crowing about russia's supposed weakness this really puts into perspective just how badly neoliberal rot has crippled the west. simply can't do what's needed to solve a crisis in their favor even when they want to

Lieutenant General Andrei Mordvichev was appointed commander of the Central Military District.

This position had previously been held by Colonel General Lapin, who was massively criticized in October for his actions in the Liman direction, but despite this he remained in the structure of the Defense Ministry. In January, Lapin was also appointed Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces.

General Mordvichev had previously served as commander of the 8th Combined Arms Army of the Southern Military District and was in charge of the Mariupol shelling operation.

Thus, in 2023, this is the third news about the change of the district commander. At the end of January, new commanders of the Southern Military District and the ZVO gained new commanders.

Never underestimate the power of double think to allow someone to rationalise two incompatible stances.

Forget being a stooge for anyone. For example: This diet coke makes me lose weight, which is why I can reward myself with a triple cheeseburger and extra large chips.

Once you understand that mentality and start to generalise a lot of policy makes sense. edit - In a way.

in 2011 our press were absolutely not framing us as aggressors and that claim probably would not have been tolerated. what was tolerated was stuff like "we don't know what the consequences will be", "we have no clear plan for regime change", "the UN mandate is unclear" etc. that is to say, what you're implying here has nothing to do with anything. i agree that it's more taboo to defend russia than it was to call us aggressors in 2011, but what i'm talking about is stuff like the previously mentioned left-wing daily saying that the Red party's policy of not arming ukraine made it reasonable to doubt that the party would go in for defending norway in the case of invasion - effectively accusing the party of treason.

in 2011, the bourgeois empire's stability was not openly in question. everyone is acting to maintain stability, and people who behave contrary to the goal of maintaining stability are perceived as enemies.

It is also just now the Empire is showing signs of the pressure being placed on it and now discipline is more openly enacted. Norway was a wealthier semi-core state so it could enjoy the luxury of some autonomy including some open dissention, but it is clear that era has drawn to a close and the demand now will be for obedience.
