I did a tour of the Clyde Dam in NZ today. The dam is built directly on a fault line. To cope with this the dam was built in two parts with a wedge of concrete down the seam. The photo below is of the point of the wedge.

Apparently the design can handle 2 metres of movement which is ten times the expected movement in an earthquake. That expected amount of movement was based on a complete guess. Oh and the method used has never been used before or since and no one is really certain it will work, because nowhere else in the world are people stupid enough to build a dam on a loving FAULT LINE!

There's a mandrel on the inside of the tube forcing it into shape, so it's not just gravity. Not sure how the separation is achieved, though.

The segments are already pre-cut, they simply fall away once they're fully off the mandrel.

Wait, how does the mandrel stay in place? Wouldn't it have to just float there.

All your friends and foes,
they thought they knew ya,
but look who's in your heart now.
it's held in place by the induction coils magnetic field, and then it's mandrel and tubes to be welded all the way left

Looks like a good dam tour, did you ask any dam questions about the dam fault?

It's held at the other end where the pipe is coming from. The real trick is getting the pipe segments onto the mandrel to begin with.

(Usually the mandrel comes off the press, you load your pipe segments onto it, then reattach it).

It’s a batch process. They have to interrupt it to load new pipe segments.

Importantly you use a chain instead of a rope, so that there's no tension that will fling the post towards the vehicle when it lets go.
