EXISTENCE IS PAIN😬
Anecdotes like that work because they check off a bunch of boxes these people already have to prime their credulity. They already believe:

-Kids are more violent, depraved, and stupid than ever before.

-Kids are quick to chase stupid, dangerous trends with little forethought on the consequences.

-Teachers are pinko enabling manipulatiors who will brainwash children into believing terrible things.

-The more time that passes, the more alienated from reality the world seems to become. Things would be much better if the world was totally unchanged from when they were in school.

So with the litter boxes thing, they can believe it because it sounds like some baffling trend that stupid kids are doing and dangerous teachers are encouraging. The world is a scary, incomprehensible tapestry and cat people using litter boxes in schools is just more proof of that.

Honestly though, having been inside many school bathrooms, a layer of litter on the floor would be an improvement.

This one is at least partially true, but only in the case of that it's the people who believe this one that wind up becoming more alienated from reality, not the world itself.

There was a lockdown in Los Angeles the summer of 2001 (before 9/11, even) where an armed gunman shot at a school police officer then fled into the garage of the school and was lost.

This was at like 7:45, so just past first bell.

The resulting lockdown lasted something around 6-7 hours. Students were locked in classrooms with no way of using any kind of facility, getting food, medication, etc. They eventually cleared the school and found the dude in an apartment complex a block away.

After the LA Times had a picture of kids holding signs out of windows reading "help trapped" and "we need food" the district started sending Lockdown Kits to help. Originally it was a trashcan and spare bags. Now I believe they're up to a plastic utility container with a toilet top lid, sawdust/litter for absorption, and a privacy screen of some kind. The district also has orange emergency bags full of essentials like alcohol wipes, thermal blankets, and other first aid things.

I saw a video from Reddit where a social studies teacher was explaining the parts of the emergency lockdown kit and it got real morbid real fast.

:v: "This bucket is what you use if you can't reach a bathroom during an emergency. It's got a toilet seat and everything."
*people giggling and tittering amongst themselves*

:v: "And these, see these bags? These are the bags I'm supposed to use to cover up anybody that died in an attack. And there's a lot of them in here"

Conscious and deliberate rejection of objective reality and reason are part and parcel of fascism. Like it's both a shibboleth and simply part of what fascists do the way prayer and ritual is part of what religious people do.

The tyranny of objective reality and the burden of reason are two of the endless enemies fascists seek to destroy.

Like I remember an old meme gag from the early internet that I saw in forum signatures here and there; "join the fight against gravity - jump today!" Fascism is, among other things, that, but playe deadly straight. So yeah, they both do and don't take it seriously because, like, 'take it seriously' means wildly different things for a fascist than it does for us, or even a conservative (and there are few conservatives left in the US).

Yes, some schools built "lockdown kits" which included a bucket of kitty litter.

This isn't a criticism or callout but: as much as you post in this thread BiggerBoat I'm surprised you missed that rumor going around. Joe Rogan even repeated it as fact, claiming that "a personal friend who is a teacher had to do this", only to get called the gently caress out immediately and halfway walk it back, which seemed to diffuse it from the mainstream. It was the last time I heard it until you posted anyway. But yeah these things have a life of their own and as long as idiots on facebook want unbelievable poo poo to be outraged about it will keep circulating.

I didn't miss it. I'd read about it.

This was the first time I'd heard it mentioned out in the wild though and as an actual second hand anecdote. The dude wasn't saying he'd read about it or seen it on the web. He was claiming that his friend or someone had related the story of the food dish directly from a parent.

I'm in total agree with this statement.

There are a small number of completely lunatic true believers but I am convinced it's a a vanishingly tiny headcount.

Almost everyone is doing the equivalent of throwing up an ideological gang sign to signal they are part of the preferred in-group. The price of entry is cheap. You just have to go out there once in a while and be heard saying something counterfactual every now and then. Your main benefit is being part of the power structure and nobody ever complaining about hypocrisy in terms of the sincere beliefs you may actually have.

Anther small group of people, probably as big as the first group, of folks profiting to some extent from saying X, Y or Z and who know it. Purely mercenary in interest.

Apparently, Kevin McCarthy gave Tucker Carlson exclusive access to 41,000 hours of Capitol Hill surveillance footage from 1/6.

Tucker’s people have to go to DC to go through the footage but no one else is getting it. Expect some James O’Keefe style editing in order to make it so shocking for Tucker’s followers.

Ah, I see. And yeah you can guarantee that he or the person he's quoting just read it on facebook and is claiming they know them "personally".

I've heard it in the wild, ran in to someone who claimed he heard it from the specific teacher who was forced to put it in at a school in a neighboring town 6 miles from ours. It was a casual situation so I just replied "yeah that didn't happen, it's urban legend, nonsense." And they definitely didn't trust their source enough to double down, and let it go.

They've got a pretty good idea of what it is by the sounds of it, at least in their minds. They put their name next to it and everything. Who's gonna gotcha them? The people with no political representation and no voices on big media platforms? The resolution was literally a bipartisan agreement that the position of the Federal Government is that socialists are basically terrorists and should gently caress off lol. Incidentally in the circles I move in, belief that any good can be achieved by working within electoral structures is at an all time low.

Yeah my bad, I thought it was something like a group of people like employees or a government (a society, if you will) controlling the means of production, especially in cases where the profit model creates a great deal of human suffering. Turns out it's actually all genocide all the time, not sure where my weird-rear end ideas came from.

https://www.cnn.com/2010/US/09/29/okeefe.cnn.prank/index.html

In 2010, James O'Keefe tried to lure then-CNN correspondent Abbie Boudreau onto a boat with the promise of an exclusive interview for her on his Project Veritas activities, only for it to turn out that it was a plot by O'Keefe to drug, kidnap, and rape her because the boat was littered with dildos, other sex toys, alcohol, and hidden cameras and Boudreau went "Nope, gently caress off" the second she saw it and just barely escaped from his thugs.

Two years later in 2012, another girl, this time one of O'Keefe's own (at the time) employees with Project Veritas, was also kidnapped by him and a hired thug, taken to a decapitated barn out in the middle of nowhere, and O'Keefe also tried and ultimately failed to rape her. After she escaped from the barn, she then sued O'Keefe for the incident and I believe he settled out of court with her for an undisclosed amount of money.

tl;dr James O'Keefe has tried and failed at least twice to kidnap and rape at least two different women, possibly more, we just don't know...

Yeah, there's 1) what you'd guess it is, 2) what your interpretation of it is after reading and thinking and discussing the themes and history, and 3) how it's actually viewed by those in power. Luckily if you go through in that order, you're not terribly surprised by the time you get to step 3, and while there's no use in dwelling on it, it's always worth keeping in mind when these signers come by with their begging bowls.

I think this is pretty accurate for a lot of insane right-wing types at this point. There are for sure people who actually believe every bit of stupid poo poo fed to them, but for a most it's the feeling of power of not having to subscribe to reality that's a big motivator. If you let them go on and on, they win. If you stand up to them and try to argue with them, they win. If you walk away, they win. If you beat the poo poo out of them, they win. Even if you get them running scared, they'll find their friends and come at you a hundred times harder.
