I grew up there but haven't been back for more than a couple of days at a time since 2002. Offhand I'd expect that they're eating it up with a spoon, it's always been a pretty redneck state overall.

I'm confused about the apparent lack of coverage on this, it seems like it is mostly being talked about in entertainment news. Maybe it's getting drowned out by other news right now. The New York Times can't seem to figure out how to cover trans issues right (possibly/likely by design, jesus their leadership sucks). Meanwhile the state/local politicians just go "you're reading the bill wrong, we're just protecting our kids from pornography". And these bills are being passed by one-party states in a flurry of activity. The news has been very boring lately, but stories like these aren't going to generate the clicks. It definitely doesn't help that transpeople are a teeny, tiny minority that can't muster up the numbers to defend themselves in these one-party states. Personally, I thought this was just 2022 election bullshit that was immediately going to die off, but Republicans found a racism-like dial they can crank to 11 for their base's support. And the overall strategy is a lot like the abortion restrictions - near-total bans due the laws written so vague that the providers don't want the legal liability. Edit: ded posted:would this also outlaw public displays of movies like mrs doubtfire? Probably. That fits the "near-total bans due the laws written so vague that the providers don't want the legal liability" idea.

ded posted:would this also outlaw public displays of movies like mrs doubtfire? In a pre-2016 world, no. Even today, most likely no. The statute seeks to regulate performances, not depictions of performances. In the statute, male and female impersonators are included with "topless dancers, go-go dancers, exotic dancers, strippers, ... or similar entertainers" for regulation purposes. If Mrs. Doubtfire was included, it would also include public (or where kids could view it) displays of any movie with strippers, gogo dancers, etc. If you want to dig, here's the proposed law: https://www.capitol.tn.gov/Bills/113/Bill/HB0009.pdf and the statutes it would amend: https://law.justia.com/codes/tennessee/2019/title-7/local-government-functions/chapter-51/part-14/section-7-51-1401/ https://law.justia.com/codes/tennessee/2010/title-7/chapter-51/part-14/7-51-1407 e: Interestingly, male/female impersonators get a save that topless dancers, strippers etc. don't get - an impersonator's performance must also be "entertainment that appeals to a prurient interest" to be illegal. (But that's going to be a jury question to be decided in whatever corner of TN it comes up in. The law doesn't ban drag shows any more that it bans strip clubs. What it does is shut down drag queen story hours at the library unless you're going to have the ACLU and a bondsman standing by ready to go. joat mon fucked around with this message at 22:36 on Feb 24, 2023 |

Since when do the cops and prosecutors need to be even handed with enforcement of laws? My point is that these laws exist to be selectively enforced against persecuted groups and that majority groups can violate them with no concern. The "wouldn't this bad [normal activity]?" is meaningless because of course cis whites aren't the targets.

Kesper North posted:@facialimpediment, more about china's pivot on arming russia A few things I've learned from Perun videos: drones generally only have a 3-10 sortie lifespan before they go boom from one cause or another, so unclear how much 100 kamikaze drones will impact the battlefield. Also, the consumption rate of artillery shells is loving incredible, nobody has enough. And comically, Iran is providing artillery shells to both sides. Apparently any country with artillery rounds is getting the ol' Lord of War treatment. So between Iran selling to mystery buyers, and intercepted shipments, Iran's shells are going in both directions.
