That's an awful decision by the mods to close the GBS thread because it was really good and no one had any issue with it except a few weirdass concern trolls but at least there's still one non-Russia/Ukraine Gravedancing thread supporting thread left.

I can't believe the United States has done this.

The meta forum is closed, and I'm not giving you money to buy access to private messages, so I'll say it here: closing the GBS thread is fundamentally unacceptable.

I waited a very long time to rejoin the forums for Lowtax to leave, and I now regret it. Both the administrative staff and a disappointing core of posters have harassed that thread and anyone using it to exhaustion. What was a strong show of support for a peaceful nation invaded by war criminals plus a handy summary of actual events on the ground (as opposed to the misery porn produced in regular mass media) has been attacked and silenced multiple times. I will no longer tolerate this abusive behavior. I will not buy anything from this owner, and I can read old comic strips somewhere else.

There's actually a new feedback forum called Something Awful Discussion. Please take your concerns about the GBS thread to SAD or PM an admin. I have absolutely nothing to do with GBS and no say in what goes on with that thread.

There is a post up in SAD for discussing the GBS thread closure: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=4025159 but it's not open for posting yet

but when it does open it'll be a better place to post about the GBS thread if you want your post to get seen by the admins and not probed

Not sure I understand the point. Nobody waited until the new feedback forum was up to discuss the closure, so it’s clearly not something up for debate.

Again, D&D mods have absolutely no say in decisions about GBS. Please take your issues to GBS mods and admins either via PMs, admin gmail, or the new feedback subforum. Posting about the GBS thread here accomplishes nothing but making GBS threads it up.

You are of course welcome to participate in posting about the war in Ukraine, but this is D&D and D&D rules will apply.

[*]Unprompted moaning about tankies/DSA/etcetera is explicitly discouraged. The majority of posts in this category fall into the buckets of “tedious” or “low-effort attempt to post about posters”.

So since it's getting a lot of GBS folks probed, I'd just like to point out that this specific thread does have some particular rules in the OP and that's mostly why folks are getting probed. Some of the relevant ones are quoted here.

The idea is that this thread should exist mostly to discuss specific events happening, sharing current information and debating the likelihood of this or that thing happening (preferably backed up with sources). It turned out that getting too riled up about people in other forums or shitposting tended to get in the way of that, so a fairly strict moderation regime was put into place to keep things on track. For what it's worth the moderation has also come down pretty hard on tankies parachuting in here as well for hit-and-run shitposting, so we've mostly I think managed to keep things fairly informative and usually on track.

If you just want to talk poo poo about Putin (and yes, he certainly deserves to have poo poo talked about him, you're not going to find many here who disagree) it's probably better to find another thread for that. This is more for gauging what Prigozhin's recent public posturing might mean for Kremlin court politics and how likely it is that Shoigu will come out on top in their little internal power struggle as well as what that might mean for events on the ground in Ukraine, and how that all impacts actions taken around Bakhmut, to take a recent example. It's a bit dry, but it's been pretty useful for getting a good gauge on what's actually going on I find.

Peace.
I suspect China's diplomatic overtures will underestimate the resistance in Brussels, Paris, Berlin, etc. to the message of European strategic autonomy. China will extend the gesture and then feel unrewarded when Europe fails to respond.

Continuing comments from Macron on l'idée d'autonomie stratégique will be seized upon as evidence that the message is working, when in fact the slogan in Western Europe itself has subtly shifted meaning from its original use and indeed now DC itself calls for Europe to take on a greater burden of its own hard-power collective defence in a scenario where soft power has unambiguously failed to deter invasion. The old context - an independent soft-power diplomatic line for Brussels on the various instabilities in the Arab world - has less salience. But Chinese diplomatic discourse will not notice because this is inconvenient for its conceptual outlook

There is a real ideological divide, even if not explicated as clearly as the Cold War: are colour revolutions (a la Ukraine 2004, say) so intrinsically illegitimate that a territorial war is no less illegitimate - is there, in fact, no meaningful distinction between soft and hard power? Is it different if it's a soldier with a gun or a civilian dissident if either case results in a loss of the unilateral and orderly exercise of power from the center? (That this power is natural and rightful is taken as given - these are the legitimate security interests)

(It wasn't that long ago that the West was on the opposite side of this debate, arguing that the various legalities established during the colonial period should be respected even during and after decolonization, and hence that the second world was undermining states in the third by promoting assorted popular revolutions, even after notional independence, that refused to respect these international agreements and commitments. The wave of colour revolutions flipped that script. The current font of legitimacy for the Western nations - winning reasonably free and fair popular elections - is not one much respected in the land of whole-process people's democracy either)

I'm not sure if it got started by the US warning the China not to cross the line or some backroom stuff, but China making any noise at all is probably a good enough reason for Zelensky to get a dialogue going.

It's basically a show of respect to China for their potential influence.

Bret Devereaux of the ACOUP blog has a pretty succinct summary of the war so far, going over his predictions from the beginning of the war and talking a bit about what he thinks might happen next. It's a good read: https://acoup.blog/2023/02/24/collections-one-year-into-the-war-in-ukraine/

i mean its a solid analogie. its also a bit of damage control from the "green little men" fiasco during the obama term and biden seems to have learned from that, that russia goverment was gonna lie no matter what happened. so just spill there secrets and wait, worst that happens was putin decided not to risk it. clearly that didnt happen.
