Yeah, I guess they could be trying to work some voodoo here but it's tough to see Vegas matching what NJ can offer. Holtz and Casey are both better than any Vegas prospect. The only thing I can think of is maybe Vegas is offering a more-ready piece that the Sharks really like. Carolina was the only real worry I had as a threat to land Meier instead of NJ, and now that they're out I feel a lot better about the chances.

Goalie brains are delicate and fragile things, it's on Sutter for leaving Markstrom hung out to dry through that whole series and probably irrecoverably breaking an important and expensive asset. Goalies never want to come out but it's the coach's job to protect their delicate and fragile brains.

The Devils were competing with many other teams for Meier for a while and so they felt determined to have the best offer. Maybe another mystery team is still in it, but because the Sharks never granted NJ the opportunity to talk extension with Claude Lemieux (Meier's agent) and now the other teams have dropped, Grier might have to settle for less, not more. For example, there is no way he is getting Dawson Mercer now, ever, considering Vegas has nowhere even close to comparable to Mercer as a potential asset going back. If the Devils still heard "hey if you don't make Mercer the centerpiece, we're going back to the Hurricanes" they might think otherwise. They wouldn't have traded him anyway, but this was just an example around leverage.
