Trading for western conference players seems dumb, they're all losers over there.

Now a good old Metro boy, that's the ticket.

full details on conditionals etc

San Jose Receives Conditional 2024 Second-Round Pick: Should New Jersey reach the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals (and Meier plays in at least 50% of Meier's Club's Playoff games in 2023) or the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals, New Jersey will transfer its own first-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft to San Jose (top 10 protected), instead of its own second-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft. If New Jersey's first-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft is a top 10 selection, New Jersey will have the option to instead transfer its own first-round pick in 2025 NHL Draft to San Jose. Should New Jersey transfer its first-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft per the original condition (top-two above in Condition A), New Jersey will instead transfer its own first-round pick in 2025 NHL Draft should they reach the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals.

Okay so

Mercer-Hughes-Bratt
Tatar-Hischier-Meier
Palat-Haula-Sharangovich
Boqvist-McLeod-Bastian

So that bottom six does need a little work, especially since Wood is actually gonna play instead of like Boqvist because Ruff likes him. 3C is a hole, and Haula should be on the 4th, but watching that top six is going to rule.

The New Jersey Devils today acquired forwards Timo Meier, Timur Ibragimov, defensemen Scott Harrington, Santeri Hatakka, goaltender Zachary Emond and a fifth-round pick (originally Colorado's selection) in the 2024 NHL Draft

I'm assuming this are mostly just for contracts???

nj gotta get to the ecf this year or next for it to be a first, otherwise it's a second

apparently the "conditional on extending the player" option is no longer something you're allowed to do

2 firsts and 3 prospects/playwrs that should at least play in the NHL seems decent for San Jose.

fawning deference
Jul 4, 2018

It's a good deal for both teams imo. Grier got a solid young NHL player, a really nice D prospect, an okay D prospect with NHL games, and potentially 2 first round picks. That's a good haul for a player who is technically still a rental for NJ.

For the Devils, they didn't give up any major prospects (they kept Holtz who I thought was as good as gone), the second 1sr is contingent on them making the ECF (if they do, they don't really need the first that badly). Fitzgerald must feel like he has a good chance to extend Meier, he certainly has the cap space, they're a fun team to play on right now, and either way NJ got a 26 year-old star player to add to one of the leagues best offenses.

Vegas and Carolina couldn't come up with something similar? That's a pretty serious basket of maybes for a prime aged top six winger.

The Devils would have to pretty much lose out this year to even have a chance at a top 2 pick so that condition is funny.

Yeah but it's absolutely a gimme because on the 0.001% chance they catastrophically collapse, if they then lost Bedard to the Sharks it would end Fitzgerald's career.

It's effective June 30th, so he'll still be captaining the trade deadline. Still doing stuff like moving Tanner Jeannot to Tampa until then. I wouldn't be surprised if it was an open secret among GMs like how Doug Wilson was pretty much known to be done last year.

If things go according to plan Jack Johnson isn't going to see the ice in the postseason. Otherwise
I would much rather have him out there than Andreas Englund or Brad Hunt.

I am getting kind of nervous about the trades the Avs are making though. Surely they don't think everything will be fixed by Landeskog returning to the lineup?
