all the tv trek writers seem to struggle for ideas, even in the era with super short seasons they can't even come up with enough plots to fill each episode.

FlamingLiberal posted:I would assume it is a money thing, because they had talked about going 7 seasons. As far as I have been told, it was indeed a surprise cancellation, but there was some level of expectation that it was coming after Paramount's CFO's comments during an investor call two days ago. They are getting time and money to rework the final episodes into a proper ending for the show, which is why the fifth season won't air until early next year.

Rest in piss, Discovery. It loving sucked from the start and never really got better. We all just got used to how terrible it was and so the later seasons seemed 'better' in comparison to that first one but honestly it always was terrible. The fact that Picard somehow completely lapped it instantly on the horribleness scale was even funnier.

This one line in particular seems pretty damning evidence for "the cancellation was unexpected":quote:Sources say principal filming of the season is mostly complete. But with this move to end the show, there will be additional filming to help craft a conclusion for the series. SNW being the flagship show makes sense and hopefully it helps to make it even better. Then again I'm sure there will be executive temptation to gently caress around with its format as well because we can't have (and keep) nice things, but who knows.

RIP Discovery. I will always remember you for your turbolift dimension and the flame jets built into the walls of the bridge*. And nothing else, because I hit da bricks after maybe six episodes in total. *(Please tell me someone has a gif of the shot where the camera is panning around and little guffs of flame come from the walls in perfect synchronisation.) Imo a show could get better with a worse budget because then you can have more focus on writing and, you know, scenes with people in them as opposed to a giant cluster gently caress aka the big battle at the end of season 2 of Disco.

I've always thought that the best creativity comes from limitations. As the creator on the inside, you may feel like you're more creative when you're not beholden to limited budgets, short timetables, strict episode run times, etc. But I think the advent of prestige shows on streaming services has removed a lot of the limitations that typically existed for broadcast television, and it's let creators get sloppy.

Beeftweeter posted:fun fact: historically, it was not uncommon for there to be only one star trek series at a time, and when they did overlap, it wasn't for very long Okay but also back during the 90s those shows were cranking 26 episodes a year, which meant getting a new episode each week for fully half of the year.

Somehow, it pretty much managed it, because its handful of writers went "Okay, we have no money, so let's squeeze as much as we can out of the characters, dialogue and ideas instead."
