I would say honestly no? As noted you get some slots that can take BAs and vehicles, but I don't generally bother deploying more than four mechs unless it's a particularly difficult mission. Some vehicles will often be useful but all suffer mobility issues in the majority of missions, so mostly I would say the support vehicles and LRM carriers are most likely to be useful, you can get ones that can call in support, repair mechs, rearm them etc.

BAs are actually severely useless IMO, they are very fragile and have terrible mobility unless you spend your time carrying them around, however you can get a device that lets you call them in via drop pod for 10k each and they will be AI piloted, this is actually a very useful bit of kit because you can drop them directly on top of enemy formations and they will go on the immediate next turn, allowing them to quickly tie up a mech and who cares if they die? So I would not spend slots or pilots on them but absolutely use them via drop pod.

Overall though I do not find it difficult to do missions with just four mechs. If you're doing four or five skull missions late in the game you might want to take more, but you can also just bring heavier mechs. Bring as many units as you feel might be useful, honestly, if you want to bring lots then do so, if not then the game should still be fine.

Finally had a complete mission failure in BTA. Jungle map where Sumire landed everyone on a tiny peninsula on the corner, connected to the main land only via a small strip of cover-less shallow water, with most of the enemy force on the other side. It was a 2 star assassination contract, I was fielding mediums and 2 flamer equipped lights (hadn't had much luck with heavy salvage so far), and there were a lot of enemy reinforcements so it ended up being 6 vs 13 in the end (including a full heavy mech lance).

And they had a mech with sniper artillery. :v:

I'm legitimately curious how you're dealing with the (surprisingly common!) 15+ enemy unit clusterfuck missions with only 4 mechs.

BA aren't fragile when built properly. With the proper pilot, you can get super common Achilles squads up to passive 50-60% DR and laugh as they soak entire lances' worth of fire with no suit losses. Proper DPS-built BA also pump out substantially more firepower than even tweaked out custom assault mechs - a squad of Sloths/Elementals/Salamanders built for swarming or a squad of Marauders/Gnomes/Golems/Grenadiers/Ravagers built for shooting can easily pump out hundreds of damage in one action for the princely sum of 10 tons off your deployment tonnage and 0.5 tons on a carry hardpoint for a 'mech to carry them around, and with proper usage of initiative they'll never be directly shot at - the 'mech carrier moves in, the BA(who have reserved down until after their carrier moves) dismount and shoot, then next turn the BA move at initiative 10 and either shoot again if it's safe or climb onto their carrier if it's not.

Also if you don't want to deal with 'mech carriers you can spend a vehicle slot on one of the various BA carriers that BA can shoot out of - Dakotas are super common but there are better ones - and just strip all the armor off the BA and load them with guns because they will never be directly shot at.

Gnomes are goddamn terrifying, and honestly Elementals are almost as dangerous if you have the right transport. I've one-shotted so many light/mediums by pulling the battle taxi 2-3 hexes away and letting them swarm.

If you can get behind something, even a 100-tonner, dropping a Gnome down is insta-death.

The Davion Guard units specifically :eng101:

As for the rest of the MW5 schemes, Marik is sort of based off a mix of Andurien units (I think), Liao is based off of House Dai Da Chi's, and the Steiner scheme is a cross of the Royal and Lyran Guard's.

The only odd one out is the Kuritan one but I guess Piranha wanted to jazz things up for them with some white and green instead of using just plain red on everything. :v:

I only get multiple complaints if I shoot someone too close and splash my own mechs.

I get a single complaint if I use "attack ground" with it, from the firing vehicle.

So I tried to do the BEXCE Battle of Tukayyid flashpoint. Two missions, 10 Clan mechs each time, managed to win with only one or two pilot injuries and a destroyed DHS.

The third mission I dropped is absolutely busted. It's the map that starts you at the south end of a narrow wooded canyon, and the enemy reinforcements are triggered as soon as you make contact. My Orion got knocked down and CT cored in a single turn. Reload. Max armor Bull Shark in cover + bulwark (60% damage reduction) gets knockdown and headcapped before I even get a visual on a target. No thanks.

Victor is an excellent AI controlled mech. Even with YAML, it’s hard to make it a good player mech, but it can add some good damage soak to your later game drops.

For the tonnage, I would take a grasshopper or an Marauder for myself over a Victor. Double so with YAML.

What's the point of stream SRMs in MW5? The St-LRMs seem like they're better at hitting moving targets but for the SRMs you always want the burst damage of a regular launcher.

LRMs, as you noted, have a tighter spread on the Stream models. Stream SRMs also have a tighter spread, but they also have a higher rate of fire.

With indirect fire weapons. You should be able to fire at those with LRMs. PODs and artillery weapons with splash damage should also work. You might need to press Tab to cycle through targets to select them.

Like was mentioned the stream SRMs have a higher RoF. I personally tend to use them if I'm limited on missile slots or I only am mounting a single SRM or two since it allows me to squeeze more out of those slots dps wise but ymmv.

You're also less likely to completely miss the target since you can do some aim correction while it fires.
