New 7h. Target isn't very good. The artwork is great and album concept is interesting, but the music is just an unfocused cluster of noise and the whole thing becomes very tiresome to listen to. First major music disappointment of '23.

As a general "new Metallica isn't the best but it's not bad!" apologist, this is... unfinished? If Lux Aeterna was them trying to make a Kill em All Track, this kinda sounds like they wanted to make an ...And Justice For All track, but left a ton of bloat in places (a minute and a half intro that just plods) and didn't do enough interesting things in others (riffs that just aren't exciting).

It kinda just baffles me that Metallica can write such generic riffs that I forget as soon as the song is over - I know they're a ton older than when they were in the 80's, but I'd like to think they could take their time and take a day or two per track to start with "this riff just doesn't stick in my mind, lets try another"

It's nonsensical that Kirk doesn't get to drive an entire album after Portals was so strong and different. I know it's the Lars & James show but seriously, these new Metallica tracks sound like the definition of uninspired.

Kalmah put out a new single that is pretty good.

I thought Palo pretty much sucked, but the song, Haunted By Guilt, is pretty good.

Kalmah are getting up there in years and they hit more often than they miss. pretty reliable for a metal band imo

Yes.
Conversely, Palo was the first time Kalmah have actually managed to grab me in any way.

New single was pretty decent too, though.

This was pretty good. I blasted a bunch of early Kalmah when I was in high school but haven't listened to much of their recent stuff.

Groan of Wind is honestly one of the best metal songs ever written.

It hits all the cool stuff you want - great opening, fast riffs, excellent vocals, amazing melody. Just a loving sick banger.

That album was my first exposure to Kalmah, and it's a favorite, despite really not sounding anything like what came before or after.

However my favorite songs are off of 12 Gauge

e: but my favorite guitar solo in metal is on their first album. the rest of the song is kind of ehh, but the guitar solo that comes in around the 30sec mark is a loving banger. That's probably an exceptionally subjective assessment but I seriously think it transcendently loving rocks.

listened to gorod, judiciary, and frozen crown today.

gorod: got exactly what i expected when i played a gorod album: pretty fuckin good tech death.
judiciary: little more on the hardcore side than thrashy. tightly written album, pretty good.
frozen crown: this is my first time listening to frozen crown. if this band existed when i was 16 it would have been one of my favorite bands at the time - rhapsody-esque power metal replacing the goofy interstitials with a wintersun or kalmah-esque melodeath influence in riff-writing is a hell of a concept. i think this is pretty good but i like the pitch way more than the execution here - there are a couple of bangers but most of the tracks are just okay to good.

Adrienne Cowan is freaking fantastic, and also a super nice person. I'm in her Patreon discord server and it's a super wholesome community. Really wish I could catch Seven Spires live, they're easily one of my favourite new bands from recent years.

I just now finished my first listen of this, and my first impression is "not great, but solid". That was pretty much make takeaway of their previous one too, but I liked their 2019 album Crowned in Frost (lol) a lot more, though I haven't listened to it in a while.
I do really appreciate that there's still power metal bands like them, who remember it's loving supposed to be guitar music.
