Russia isn't playing to the social media crowd, they're all still a bunch of ruling class factions trying to make deals with the ruling class of other countries. Kremlin is doing it's own thing, while the people do theirs.

When protestors clamour for vaguely defined "freedom" or whatever, Russia and China have not had a very effective way to counterbalance that. Obviously we know, and so do China and Russia that Colour Revolutions, anti-corruption movements, whatever, those are just western interests, but it would be nice to be able to do what Cuba and Venezuela do and turn out massive counterdemonstrations with an equally well defined and positive message. Riot shields, tear gas and T-55s are the response Colour Revolutions are intended to provoke, and so far the best way to stop them, but as we were saying earlier it means that they're always a close run thing as the measures taken to stop them reinforce the narrative that the state consists of jackbooted thugs crushing protesters demanding freedom. The separatists organizing into a militia shows that there was popular support for a counter coup, but the Ukrainian government was too dysfunctional to make use of it and the Kremlin was too asleep at the wheel to even bother. Edit: Still need to wait and see how Georgia shakes out.

Russia can't concoct an effective way to counterbalance colour revolutions because it barely stands for anything meaningful in the same way the West doesn't. The government can only argue that defending the state and its resources in order to be exploited by Russian oligarchs is better than being pillaged by Western oligarchs (which is true!) but the effective unifying message to the citizens has been killed deliberately by the Russian government  China should be able to do better for obvious reasons, but the government is popular and attempts at colour revolution have repeatedly fizzled out, so do they really need to improve their communications?
