The BBC stuff is objectively dumber than America tbf. My effort to explain it:

- UK government want to pass legislation to try and further limit the amount of people getting here to claim asylum. This is because the country is hosed, people don't earn enough to pay their bills and this is very comfortable ground for a Tory government to campaign on because they have nothing else
- Gary Lineker, who presents Match Of The Day and has housed refugees in his home before, posts on his personal Twitter account something along the lines of "the language used around this policy could lead us to a dangerous place, refugees are people too"
- The BBC, who are poo poo scared of the Conservative government and have Tory political appointees at the highest level, decided they didn't want Lineker to present MOTD on Saturday, citing something about how all BBC people should be impartial (even though that's not what Lineker's contract says)
- Upon hearing the news, Ian Wright said he wouldn't present MOTD without Lineker. Alan Shearer then followed. Over the next few hours everybody who is on a freelance contract to do anything relating to football for the BBC announced that they wouldn't be available to work
- MOTD went out as a 20 minute show with no commentary and no studio analysis, a few Conservative MPs who have never watched football before pretended it was better

Here’s how I, a dumb American, understand it:

Lineker made a tweet criticizing immigration policy. The BBC has a policy about being politically independent and some employees not sharing their political position, but no one seems to know what this policy means and it might have been selectively enforced. Conservatives complained about Lineker and the BBC caved to their pressure and soft fired Lineker. Everyone immediately recognized that this appeared to be the BBC caving to conservative pressure and that Lineker was probably right anyway and all of the television personalities went on strike.

I would only add Lineker is not an employee of the BBC, he's a contractor.

Also there is zero doubt it was selectively enforced, since Lineker posted "bin corbyn" years ago and no one cared

And also Fiona Bruce did "well in fairness the father of the ex-Prime Minister only punched his wife in the face once" on an actual BBC show two days later. As well as the general existence of Andrew Neil, a man who looks like he exhales beef wherever he goes.

The BBC rules explicitly call out that impartiality refers to the area they work in and uses the example of a sports presenter talking about politics not being an issue. Not that they cared when Andrew Neil was promoting Brexit
