It’s listed online for about eight hundred bucks, but so much cheaper when “pre‐owned”. Wire a dozen of them in series, and save a few hundred bucks. Surely one will break the fault.

My grandmother is in her late 80s. She and her brother very young children around when the US got into WW2. When the war started, her whole family made a big move so that her dad could get a job at one of factories opened for building supplies. Her main memory of that move was taking a long train ride where she and her brother both slept in the overhead luggage area. I might have to show her this and ask if it was in one of these things.

how do so many trucks happen to break down when their rear end is on a train track

HolHorsejob posted:how do so many trucks happen to break down when their rear end is on a train track train tracks are often slightly elevated compared to the rest of the road surface, creating a small bump, and trucks are long. As a result, low trucks have a habit of getting stuck. Other than that, it's just numbers. railroads like to eliminate level crossings wherever they can manage it for a reason, after all. If you think level crossings are weird, look up "street running." (Street running is awesome and railroads should do more of it for my entertainment.)

Genesplicer posted:How heavily armored is the front of those engines? Doesn't even look scratched. Very armored. Literally armored. The front can deform in some cases. It's where the toilet is located. Train drivers avoid going to the toilet in places where they could potentially hit things because it would be a particularly unpleasant place to get trapped by deformed metal, or to die. Bullet proof glass is also a thing. Both because of hitting things, but also because Muricans like to shoot trains. Yes, really. LimaBiker fucked around with this message at 10:29 on Mar 11, 2023 |

2500 amps. If he's got an average EV motor running at around 400 volts, that's 1 million watts.
