Has anyone else been hooking into the Cave Diving videos that the youtube algorithm has been vomiting up for the past six months or is that just me? It seems like there's a lot of crossover in the "Climbers die in horrific ways" and "Untrained morons diving into caves for the first time die in horrific ways" content.

Similar thing with shipwrecks.

For a while goons were sending these to the trashfuture stream on twitch and we got to see some awful cave diving and shipwreck tragedies, there have been enough to the point where they literally put plaques at the bottom of these places with DON'T GO PAST THIS POINT YOU WILL DIE THERE HAVE BEEN X NUMBER OF DEATHS and people STILL do it, it's mental illness.

Someone at a work drinks thing last year kept trying to persuade me to go free-diving in the lake by the office. Obviously a serial killer.

Oh, I'm just, so attracted to people who free-dive, you say you don't have a girlfriend? That's really weird! Want to get married?

I can't think of anything to put here.
Would vintage cave diving be of interest? It's sort of like mountain climbing in the opposite direction, so hopefully not too off topic. My favorite channel would have to be Sid Perou's which I found out about from the thread about the Thai cave rescue a few years ago. It also looks like there are some climbing videos too which I'll have to start going through.
Link: https://www.youtube.com/@Cavingcameraman/videos
He has a three part series about the history of cave diving starting here which is a good starting point.

Anybody really interested in cave diving should buy the book "The Darkness Beckons" about the history of cave diving from the late 1800s into the 20th century. Most of it about the British, because they were the people who used to do lunatic poo poo then write all about it for future historians to read, but other cultures too.

This article from Outside is the first really in-depth (lol didn't meant to do that) thing that I read about free-diving:

https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/water-activities/open-your-mouth-and-youre-dead/

And here's a dude riding a sled down 145m and then pulling himself/swimming back up:

My favourite thing about cave divers are the types, like the Dive Talk hosts, who insist that a lot of the cave diving death videos on youtube are primarily from the mid 20th century, when Cave Diving was a new sport and a lot of the safety guidelines were not in place. With proper training, gear, and by following standard safety protocol, then cave diving is a perfectly safe sport and it's only these yahoos like freedivers that are still causing underwater caves to be considered as 'scary' or 'dangerous'.

Except, even with the proper gear and training, cave divers still die all the time.

That article about Agnes Milowka is full of quotes from some guy making GBS threads himself that they'll ban his hobby simply because it's so deadly. Like Agnes was a wonderful person and a skilled diver, she wasn't taking any undue risks going down that route alone and anyway only one person can fit through, which is not a reason not to do it, no sir, and please don't blame Agnes, but also please don't blame the sport. It just happened for no reason! Let's not introspect!

Caving diving terrifies me more than anything but I can't stop reading about it. Wonder if that's a small part of why people pursue these extreme uhh hobbies because it scratches a similar itch.
