There's a pretty significant amount of people that think he's the good guy because he's the main character.

It's like Patrick Bateman all over again haha

I think that’s just been a problem with a certain portion of audiences for forever. At least going back to Archie Bunker, and I’m sure there are earlier examples I’m just not familiar with.

I don't understand why people feel they need to take such a binary stance on Walter White. Clearly he is a POS and a bad person, but it's not surprising that people think he's cool either. He does cool stuff, he kills bad guys you hate. You can't help but root for him a lot of the time, but he's also just as evil as any of the bad guys on the show. He might even be the worst one. That's kind of the whole reason he's an interesting character.

I've never really understood the impetus to refer to any fictional person as being good or bad

Genuinely tho while skylar hate was insane and misogynistic you are watching the show to watch the guy go on drug crime adventures. Naturally you are going to root against the character trying the hardest to prevent the fun drug crime adventures from happening

I honestly think its a problem with the character. Skylar is incredibly boring, and all she does is get in the way of Walter doing interesting things. There is very little more to her beyond that. Its not very surprising that people hate her, and I don't think it really shows anything about their character.

Yeah I think the problem with Skylar is that she's probably the most linear character in the show, she has almost no arc at all.

What's she doing? Giving Walt poo poo. How about now? Still giving Walt poo poo. What about now? Giving Walt poo poo.

The only real interesting run was when she had the affair with her boss. Compared to the other secondary characters she just didn't have anything going on.

Better that (and that's way oversimplified, Skylar has a lot of escalating reactions to Walt's poo poo) than Marie's garbo arcs for most of the series.

Oscar Wilde's quote about it being pointless to divide people into good or bad, they're either interesting or tedious, holds doubly true for TV characters because their actions aren't real.

It's always the characters that act the way a real person would act that annoys audiences. If you found out your significant other was manufacturing and selling drugs out of the blue, you'd probably try to talk them out of it and or take the kids and get as far away as possible. But we don't want to watch people being scared or safe or sensible, we want to watch people pulling capers.

I will say I recently rewatched the series and I was surprised at how flawed Walt was right from the beginning. He wasn't poisoning children or anything like that but the seeds of who he would become were all there.

This is also why people hate realistic depictions of kids in shows/movies. Real kids are dumb and whiny and no one wants to watch that poo poo.

I think this is part of why all the "you probably shouldn't be doing fun crimes" people in BCS are more fun to watch. They get a lot more to do than be slowly destroyed by being in proximity to the crime protagonist.

I think there’s a lot more to it than that. For one she was a hypocrite and somehow remained a scold no matter how deep she got into the business. Second, so many crime movies had already done the whole “wife as antagonist” thing and it felt very played out: Blow, Scarface, Casino, Goodfellas, etc.

By the time BB came out, stuff like the Sopranos and The Departed (and a personal favourite, 25th Hour) had already tried to take a more nuanced approach to those characters. Skylar’s behaviour might be realistic but it was far from interesting at that point. Kim Wexler is a much better written character.

Kim Wexler is an S tier character. I can't even compare any modern person from a series, she is that good.

Criterion has a whole Michelle Yeoh collection rn and there's some real bangers. Hong Kong 80s action cinema is basically loving unparalleled but everyone already knows this. The outfits, the synth, the abrupt endings, ridiculous mood, insane stunts, merciless and brutal deaths of any and all characters no matter how significant and/or innocent, and the cartoonish efficient pace of nonstop action. Had a good run with Yes Madam!, Royal Warriors, and also Millionaires' Express on Arrow featuring Sammo Hung and a host of other people (of course Rothrock).
My all time favorite at the moment is Righting Wrongs though which I don't think is on streaming. There may be a lovely copy on that action film amazon prime subchannel called kung fu or w/e
