Can't speak for everyone else but the cast in the first game was perfectly serviceable. Nothing special. The problems with the first game to me had a lot more to do with how overtly Formulaic everything was.

i think low key two of the funniest moments in yakuza 6 are like

kiryu refusing to fight for sport in an underground fighting arena in order to obtain information. i guess that's... suddenly something he objects to... even though he already did it two or three times? the only real difference is that the arena is flashier and the audience are mostly women instead of creepy rich people. he's even fought purely for sport without any kind of reward of info before, can't really think of any special reason for him to object to a fight other than, he didn't want to show an audience full of women his half-naked bod, i guess

why did kuzushiro pretend to shoot kiyomi with a blank. if he was motivated by not wanting to listen to iwami anymore he could've just shot iwami and sugai. there's no way what pushed him to do it was seeing the one guy's sacrifice cause he'd have had to either reload his pistol with pre-prepared blanks very quickly or he'd have to have come in with blanks already loaded, he didn't really have an opportunity mid-call to switch anything out so he must have walked in with blanks already loaded, which implies it was his plan from the start. but why settle on that plan to begin with when he could've just shot sugai and iwami while he was in an enclosed room with them both. even with a pistol loaded with blanks he easily could have killed them, it's not like blanks are this magic thing that can't hurt people, in close proximity they're still lethal. there was nothing stopping him from killing both of them.

florist: hello kiryu. nice to see you again. i know you need information. i will give you the information if you fight gary buster holmes in the arena again
kiryu: no
florist: huh? why not
kiryu: i will not make a showpiece of my body for your audience
florist: but you just fought for prize money in there last week so you could upgrade your slot car
kiryu: *staring at newly installed neon sign flashing "FLORIST" in cursive on arena cage* it's not honorable...

also on a smaller level it just. it loving killed me having akiyama dramatically say "you cant kill anyone kiryu. i wont let you kill anyone. if you wanted to kill someone i'd rather kill them for you to preserve your moral purity. i need you to stay pure so you can fulfill my wish of being kamurocho's big daddy" like even ignoring how hilarious it is to say in the dialog kiryu's never killed anyone that's like. holy poo poo dude are you being for real lmfao

there was a good scene later in the game where kiryu talked about how he was tired of being put on a pedestal. he wasn't some pure, perfect saint and if need be he'd kill someone. but like every other theme in the game, it never went anywhere.

that was the exact scene. that was his response to people telling him they never thought he'd kill people. it might've gone somewhere if he was actually ultimately put in a position where he had the option to kill them but, once he actually does get put there the game just flashes forward to people saying "wow, i'm so glad the bad guy got arrested after the other bad guy killed himself"

it's honestly like, shocking that anyone questions the idea he'd kill them to begin with cause like. well. of course. can you blame a guy for deciding he's going to kill two ruthless turbo murderers with apparent diplomatic immunity, who literally are the only reasons anyone around him are in danger and if killed will seemingly leave no one else with an interest in hurting them

Ishin spoiler: I feel like Not Kiryu reconciling with his sworn brother/antagonist was a slightly better note to end the game on than a random sniveling villain who hasn't even been in the game to this point show up, shoot two people, and then die in a cutscene after the MC can give a speech in praise of Japanese patriotism

given that ishin has a nude fight between Kiryu and Ryuji Goda that looks like the national beef convention I think the Yakuza creator may be confused

I'm torn on EO3's postgame because the aesthetic, concept, and music are all absolutely top shelf stuff but actually playing it kind of sucks. Abyssal God kind of exemplifies it because, again, aesthetically, conceptually, and musically his fight is utterly amazing but design-wise he might be one of the worst bosses in JRPG history.

The original 8 are like, fine in a vacuum but they just don't have the extended cast like in Octopath 2 to flesh themselves out more or present opportunities show off their personalities. People wanted the original 8 to interact with each other since that made the most sense, and the argument is even more compelling when the characters interact with barely anyone other than their antagonists. There's also just not as much sprite variation in the original to show off the personalities.

Octopath 2 comes along and it has some increased party interaction but not a lot. However, it's barely missed now that the each character's arc have a lot of extra cast members, even if many are one-offs, to give more scenes of showing off the well written personalities. Even Throne just like, chatting up a guard in front of that one mansion - you think it'd just be some throwaway dialog but it's actually really cool. The game just does a lot more this time around.

Also I think the Octopath 2 VA is just really good on the JP dub, personally. Although I do share in the earlier meme about Hikari!

On top of the increased number of incidental interactions, Octopath II is extremely genre savvy. It’s subversive enough that I definitely didn’t see some things coming, and in a few cases, did, but the plot always twisted the expected outcomes in really clever ways. I’m not saying it has Disco Elysium level writing or anything, but for as seemingly simple as its plots are, they’re absolutely packed with impactful and economical scenes and dialogue that does a ton with a little.

The reveal about what happened to Father's child is one of the few times I've had to put a game down and just step away. I had bought completely into the illusion and that hit me like a ton of bricks.

ishin owns but I can absolutely see why this was not initially localized lol, it seems to assume a lot of back knowledge on a relatively complicated period in national history, though they're managing to tell a relatively compelling story eben with the limitations of using real life analogues

also it has the worst in-game glossery/terms feature ive ever seen. there are like 10 words in the list with translations and they're poo poo like "edo" and "kyo" that I think most people already know and not something like "dappan" which they start dropping in like halfway through transliterated

I played some of the original Japanese release a while back and yeah, these are just Ishin problems. Th glossary is pretty hit and miss, and you really need a primer course on the history and culture of the Bakumatsu period to understand what the heck is going on at times. The story is all just Ryoma Sakamoto fanfic anyway. (Which is somehow an entire genre of media in itself)

I just noticed Soul Hackers 2 is on Game Pass. I heard pretty negative things about the game, but I'm not above some jank, grinding and featureless dungeons. I just wanna know if they ever fixed/changed the thing where you apparently couldn't get the full story of each party members until NG+ or something. I don't actually know the details, I might have been off the mark anyways, it was just something I vaguely remember reading complaints about. Because yeah, THAT would be kind of a deal breaker.

Just how many mistakes have you suffered on the way here?

An uncountable number, to be sure.
You can absolutely get the full stories, that guy who was complaining is just dumb.

Edit: You just have to balance your friendship levels with them instead of favoring any of them too much. I literally just chose the options to raise the lowest one each time.

To add to that, they're not mystery choices like Persona either, the game specifically tells you which option is aligned with who.

I've noticed some things different about this version of Genius of Sappheiros. I can't seem to get either Mokou or Byakuren early and the vending machine for the promo items isn't in Kourindou, so no free item drop boost accessory either.

Still, it is nice to get in English officially. Maybe they will do the other two next?
