This is one of the reasons why many modern ttrpgs make it very clear that roleplaying is a social activity that should require informed consent and respect for boundaries.

The fact that people in this game would mock other people whose boundaries they've overstepped is, at minimum, deeply crass and unsavory.

That said, jfc

Especially for what seems like essentially discord larping, if the whole "24/7" thing about it is true, then there's no disconnect from the game experience it basically becomes a lived habit that can mess with you psychologically

Yep. Something that happen with these games was they would get talk up to being something different from other RP games too. This just led to a culture where like unhealthy stuff was clearly happening, but because "this is different from those other games" there was this justification of "well we are still figuring this all out," despite like as you said being a large part of modern discussions already.

I can't find the post but not that long ago the sagas thread remembered that there was an Ask Me Anything thread by a former World of Darkness vampire serial roleplay addict - offline, but similar kind of heavy plotlines and things - and it was both incredibly enlightening and terrifying. She just barely managed to get out before it was too late, by all accounts.

But it basically described the atmosphere Bifauxnen talked about - FOMO, an all-consuming hobby. And this was from quite a few years ago so when I was reading it I thought "well, surely now RP like this has better safeguards now that people are aware of the issue, right?"

Apparently not.

This is exactly it, yeah. The games developed in their own way from mafia to a puzzle game to roleplaying, so there was a sense that it was a new, wholly unique kind of game. It wasn’t helped by the relative success of most of the games papering over the structural flaws; the lack of OOC communication or safety guides, primarily, at least beyond putting everything on the GM and hoping they could handle it as well as the issues of every other one of the 16+ players.

It was pretty isolating alongside the time demands, which made things very intense in good and bad ways but let minor issues cascade into major ones, as the GMs were under intense pressure to handle everything at all times 24/7, and players had no outlet to communicate issues with the game or even minor gripes without going through those responsible for the game in the first place.

A gross misogynistic poster that’s obsessed with a rape art board game that more than a dozen people asked to be thread banned multiple times getting protected by both Podima and Leper for one. What is the point of mods if not to enforce the values of the community they are serving?

Might seem like a grudge or off topic post but considering this poo poo drove away many respected community members (notably our former IK who was a woman, with a sexist “she was difficult to work with” note to boot) it has a very direct through line now that this garbage came to light. Especially given that it involves the mod this thread is about.

Honestly I think people close to this are being too willing to undersell the problem because they assume everyone thinks this entire genre of role-playing is some insane freak thing in the first place.

I tried a game like this once when I was like 13 and way too into Dragonball Z, and nothing weird happened or anything. But fundamentally, role-playing is fairly mainstream at this point, and I think any "normies" reading about this should have no trouble understanding why people could be into this kind of unique social game and why the dangers inherent to it make it really obvious that certain precautions are really important.

Basically I'm saying this kind of post:

i had no idea any of this stuff was going on with riven or myst or any of those games when i suggested pod become admin. i dont get/do rp style games. My experience with podima was always on the mafia/frg end of things and we always tried to foster an open and safe environment there. i feel like he always did a good job in handling those games as a mod and had no idea about the peramene stuff and that was why there was a huge rift in the mafia/play by post community.

I don't think even D&D style roleplay is mainstream, let alone more involved stuff like LARPs and less gamey stuff like freeform RP. The kind of all consuming hyper-online stuff going on here really is several notches removed from mainstream, and that's part of what makes those unique joys and inherent dangers a lot harder to talk about.

Maybe I'm coming at this from a stupid legal perspective or something, but my point is that people keep pointing out that these communities have figured out ways of handling this poo poo. Like, yes, there are dangers. Also, in this particular instance, it sounds like the problem actors ignored really basic and well established guidelines in the community in order to proceed in the way they did.

reddit has this problem too, except instead of some dumbass checking in once every 3 weeks to give random people admin, they get admin by camping every possible variation of a subreddit name until they get lucky and some dev announces CounterStrike 2: Valor on the Battlefield and then r/CS2VB who also runs r/jailbait and r/ukrainewarporn works with valve to keep moderating their community lol

anyways its probably a good thing for us to have the same problems as reddit right
