Even if those ancient tanks *could* be modernised, what do you think the chances are of Russia having the necessary kit just lying around waiting to be applied to tank?

I wonder just how bad in condition the engines are on those T-54/55s. I'd imagine it's like those videos of folks hauling a T-34 out of a bog and starting it up for the first time in 70 years.
Also, just LOL at that T-54/55 orgy

They could always fill the ERA containers with some of those wooden TNT blocks they got lying around as well. There was also the case of the one T-62 they found in Kherson that had, no joke, rubber stuffed into the ERA blocks.

In for OHSA chat. I was involved for a time with the WR Grace trial back in the early ‘00’s. Lots of other interesting stuff to be learned outside of workplace safety (the feds knew asbestos was no beuno and didn’t bother to tell anyone for like a decade, the fastest way to lose a case is for a federal judge to find out the ADA was giving gifts and wining and dining their lead prosecution witness)

There was a large amount of time spent before and during trial going over how agonizingly difficult it was to get any of those 50-70’s era miners to take any precautions whatsoever.

Please wear PPE: Nope
Please don’t wear your mining clothes home: No can do boss
I’m begging you, take a shower before you go home: real men don’t bathe
Don’t smoke while working: How bout I smoke this cig while snorting a line of vermiculite?

Rubber blocks are a real form of armor. NERA, Non-explosive reactive armor: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-explosive_reactive_armor
Lots of the early pics from the war were that. It's a legit armor, even if not as effective as explosive materials. The rubber serves to dampen the shockwave.

I can definitely see George Carlin saying it, maybe even during a war. Then there was Jonathan Winters, who spent two years in the Pacific as a Marine, who might actually have said it or something similar.

Yup, the reason rubber armor exists is because ERA is lethal to squishies within about 15-20 yds, and can't take multiple hits.

(you really don't want to be within 20 yds of a tank getting hit with an AT weapon or a tank round anyways, but i digress)

Even the Russians themselves have lost patience with propagandists trying to spin the reintroduction of the ancient rustbuckets to the battlefield as somehow being a good thing. This guy realizes that anything they have left now is no match for the modern or modernized tanks the Ukrainian military will be receiving.

Well, not all the ukrainian aid is top-notch either; they are getting a good bunch of Leo 1a5s at the side of the Leo 2s.

Those things are NOT heavily armored. The good part is they share the good crew ergonomics of Leo 2 as well as a decent sights / FCS (I think 1a5 has a variant of 2a4 EMES primary sight combined with the PERI for TC) which makes them absolute glass cannons against t55/t62

Traditional aikido teaches deconfliction and retreat as the primary approaches to a fight so it's more likely to save Russian lives.
