Someone taking a Japanese word and adapting it for the name of a Chinese person would be exactly what I expect from certain eras of this game's worldbuilding given how bad at other languages the writers can be.

There's not like 400 different items to mix and match. They are mad about this despite the fact that cgl said that was a huge mistake that made the last one incredibly difficult.

They were given the mold and tooling as a gift from a manufacturer to try and save face after some fuckup, so I will say I'd prefer them to give them away rather than trying to charge for something they got for nothing.

Why do you think they need something to be mad about? There being nothing to be mad about is itself something to be mad about!

Apparently there are still a ridiculous number of canon characters to actually work into the setting from last time, so I can see why they really don't want to make that problem worse.

I feel for the poor sod at cgl who had to field his no doubt incessant pestering about when they were going to use the rest of his character background.

If the original article is up somewhere it would be amusing to compare its length to canon pillars of the setting like Jerome Blake, several Kerenskys, Carlyle, etc.

Alright, this is a deep dive largely because I can't help myself when it comes to exploring language, but the point I'm getting at is that if you're going to try to use language to add diversity of culture into your stories, you should do the barest of research so you don't get things bafflingly wrong.

Certain languages have certain sounds absent from other languages. There's just something about how whole groups of humans never figured out how to move their mouth into a specific shape to make a sound with it that I find fascinating. Like "th" in English is actually a fairly rare sound across languages, loads of non-native English speakers struggle with it and it's even dropped in some English dialects and accents (think "Da Bears" in the classic Chicagoan accent).

In any case, Chinese has three consonants that simply do not exist in English. They're represented by j, q, and x in pinyin. The closest equivalents are the consonants represented by zh, ch, and sh respectively (and even this isn't quite accurate and is overly simplified as the English equivalents are really in between, but they lean towards these three).

Your tongue can occupy a range of positions in your mouth and it moving front to back, curled, to flat is where a lot of subtlety in sound comes from. L/N/R is a good example in English of this where the L is a flatter tongue with the tip towards the front top of your mouth and the R is basically the same thing, but the tongue is curled towards the back (trying saying Low, No, Row in quick succession to hear/feel what I mean).

So in (Mandarin) Chinese (represented by pinyin) j, q, and x represent sort of the inverse of zh, ch, and sh. J and Zh are like the difference between L and R in English. With j, q, and x, the tongue is placed behind the bottom front teeth and so the sound has something of a hiss to it.

J/Zh - the j sound in "jump" is closer to the zh than to the j

Q/Ch - the ch sound in "cheese" is closer to the ch than to the q

X/Sh - the sh sound in "she" is closer to the sh than to the x.

If you're just learning Chinese, trying to apply the approximate English consonant equivalent to both sounds in the pair is going to get you close enough to be understood most of the time, context willing. Watching newscasters fold themselves into pretzels trying to pronounce "Xi" as in Chinese President Xi is incredibly embarrassing because "she" is Good Enough and won't make you sound like a complete rear end. It is not an "s". It is not a "z". It is not a soft g or j sound. It is best described as a "soft sh".

Likewise, Qi is pronounced near enough to the first half of "cheese" that people will know what you're trying to say even if making your tongue perfectly flat doesn't come naturally for you.

Tangentially related, I like the above theory that they were bouncing between Japanese and Chinese phonics systems without really understanding them because it really does show an absolute disconnect between the writer and the actual cultures and languages they're supposed to be describing. Two major Chinese dialects are Mandarin (the Beijing language, what I've been focusing on) and Hokkien (a southern language, common in Taiwan and Singapore as well as Fujian province). These are related but not mutually intelligible languages (think Dutch, German, and English) (and you can see I'm throwing the words "dialect" and "language" around pretty casually, but really they're distinct languages). In any case, they have a J/K swap between the two of them. So the word gold in Mandarin is "jin" (like genie) and in Hokkien it's "kin" (like keen), so spelling a Chinese character's name with a K implies to me that it would actually be Ji, not Ki, which is not even a legal Mandarin syllable, and that the character has Hokkien heritage (and then I'd expect her surname to be Lim).

It seems unlikely that this is what Wizkids was implying.

Well I'm glad you got something out of my ramblings, haha. Languages are cool and you really have to know what you're doing to avoid coming across like an ignorant rear end when loving around with them.

Neal Stephenson has a great digression about the use of apostrophes in fantasy and science fiction names and words in his book Reamde. Two authors, one a Kevin J. Anderson type and the other more of a Tolkien, are in charge of developing the background for an MMO and it results in an ideological rift in the player base. Half the players side with the Tolkien-style writer because they like the authenticity of the world building while the others go with the schlockier writer because "you can pry my meaningless apostrophes from my cold, dead hands; they look cool!"

Nah that was a great post. I've been learning Klingon for two years and was internally screaming Yes! Yes! at the "th" thing, bc Marc Okrand is a huge language nerd and made sure to add the "tlh" consonant which is both baffling to my English tongue and apparently a hallmark of ancient Mesoamerican languages.

Yeah, coincidentally I'm from a culture that has wonky phonemes for speaking English with to the point that the latest issue of Shrapnel has an article that corrects the pronunciation of a name because we all cringe when we hear it said by anyone else. It's way less of a problem but it sure does make interpreting phoneme instructions... "fun".
