He has defense and intelligence in roads yeah. Starlink has been found to be used by "rebel groups" in Latin America and was rolled pit for Ukraine.

It feels like a big chunk of SV tech could do layoffs and not materially impact unemployment/jobs numbers because so much of it was literally hoarding talent that will filter out to less insanely compensated position in other industries.

Not great for upward mobility for workers but like even with all the fake job openings there is still a strong demand for talent, just not at FAANG compensation levels.

the most tech related stuff they do is designing and building the computing infrastructure they need to support their primary businesses, yeah. though in amazon's case i wouldn't be surprised if aws was their biggest source of income these days, so i guess they would qualify as a tech company then

I wonder where the divide is between that and other forms of patronage. Are they the same people who go to Georgetown or West Point, and it's just a difference of personality that determines what stream they enter, or do different families send their kids to different institutions that do more or less the same thing, be they staff officers, academics, political staffers, consultants or FAANG based on region or something?

I guess I'm asking if it's a Yankee/Cowboy divide?

I know a family who does this because the husband made a decent living as a private pilot for a wealthy family. Until he had a rough landing and some other oopsies and the family dropped him and now he's doing other pilot stuff but not doing nearly as well and they are falling behind because they haven't adjusted their lifestyle at all. The wife just spends spends spends with no regard for anything because its all credit and he takes care of it at the end of the month, which won't be happening as easily now

My wife makes a point to do it. I never understood it because credit card debt makes me sick to my stomach so I never use mine. She checks her credit rating a few times a week and makes sure to never carry a balance of more than 33% or something, but also makes sure to use her card often for things like packs of gum so she can pay it off at the end of the month.

I don't know, I hate them, I don't know why people have them.

because the entire credit system is a way to keep people in perpetual debt thats the entire reason it exists and it gets worse and worse because almost no-one in the us has any disposable income

the only way this system can keep pretending it's possible to keep going like it has been is because of trusting "visionaries" like musk who want to pretend we can keep inventing new things that let us consume more and more and make number go up

it's like the economists who say that the laws of thermodynamics don't apply because we can keep "decoupling" economic activity from physical production and consumption of resources - i.e. rent seeking

of course all of the actual technological (even putting aside the more difficult political and social) problems that need to be solved are mostly beyond the ability or desire of the market to solve over the short term so they won't receive the resources they need to actually get done

the same way we drilled into people's head that you should not spend more than 33% of your income on rent, people should know that the minimum payment on a CC should never exceed 5% to 10% of your monthly income. Going above that means your getting further away from the possibility of ever repaying it. Instead people think: "I have X extra per month after paying essentials (rent, utilities and food), that means I can go up to X amount per month as minimum payments and still be ok!"

interviews are so poo poo right now if you can even get one with companies dragging the processes out to ridiculous levels. i have to self-therapy by reading r/recruitinghell and other places to get validation and try and not lose my mind

i started with one place almost a month and a half ago and have had three conversations thus far, never mind that two of them were with c/vp-level people who should have been able to suss me out. i was supposed to get an update almost two weeks ago which turned into an update by two days ago because of how long they've supposedly been taking to "finish interviews." they might just be afraid to turn me down but at that point just don't even reply to my emails.

the best part is that the job would likely be anywhere from a $20-30k cut from what i made previously because it's an employer's market and job seekers have zero leverage. america owns.

Their advertising operations are distinct from AWS, right? I believe advertising has been successful for them too.

Amazon used to be notorious for investing back into its infrastructure, which would be at the cost of retail business profitability. I'm not sure if that is still the excuse now. If e-commerce generally picks back up, the numbers might look better for that branch of the business.

I'd like to know how much burning money on stuff like Rings of Power and sinking money into Alexa devices also eroded the bottom line.

If you have a cash back or travel point credit card, putting everyday spending on it and paying it off at the end of the month is fine. Just be aware the credit card companies are trying to trap you into carrying a balance.
