Just curious, Iceland and Australia have pretty high anti-depressant usage too. Do they have an equivalent amount of mass shootings? Surely if it was this factor causing the problem it wouldn't be localised to the USA.

From some light Googling, Iceland has historically been one of the safest countries in the world despite having high per capita gun ownership. There has been a recent uptick in shootings over the past couple of years, but only four and only one of which was fatal. The increase has been attributed to organized criminal activity. Australia had the infamous Port Arthur shooting in 1996 that killed 35 people. The reaction was the implementation of extremely strict gun laws and bans on semi-automatics and shotguns. There have been no mass shootings since and in 2019, the country had 219 total gun-related deaths. In other words, the issue isn't mental health care. It's our society's deeply hosed up relationship to guns and also our society being deeply hosed up in general.
