I moved to Boise last year to be closer to family and while it remains an extremely car dependent city I've been pleasantly surprised by how bike friendly the downtown core is. There are some separated bike lanes, lots of bike parking, and it's pretty well utilized as well. There's a 21-mile greenbelt that a lot of people use for commuting which is well maintained and I see people with kids in seats and trailers every day when I walk my dog along it. Don't get me wrong, public transit may as well not exist and a ton of the city remains effectively inaccessible without a car, but it's reassuring to know that even in a city this in love with cars there's the possibility of growing other transportation methods alongside it

you can manage this in most cities if you are either privileged or lucky enough to be able to plan your career and life around a specific type of commute in a specific area where specific people can get jobs and homes

Atlanta seems like an utter hellscape stuck in a past where cars are always going to be cheap and freely available. That new development they built for the Braves' stadium is straight out of 1970s-1980s planning.

The Battery (Braves complex) is total poo poo and I hate it. There's no hope for the greater metro area. They're determined to be stuck in traffic for the rest of their lives, and I say more power to them. The problem comes when they impose their car bullshit on the city itself. I'm hoping we'll continue to see real growth in population and density inside the perimeter so that the city can stand up for itself better against the suburbanites.

The only time I've been to the Battery was a few years ago to see Modest Mouse. They put on a thoroughly mediocre show, everyone was sitting in chairs, and there were giant bright screens blasting Coke ads the whole time. Stuck in highway traffic there and back. The next time I saw MM was at the Tabernacle in downtown Atlanta and it was a blast. Then I rode MARTA home.

It's fun to watch the intro sequence to CHiPs and realize that people in the 1970s thought the endless strips of freeway were a good thing

What's funny about it is that I don't live in a nice neighborhood, it's all rundown apartment buildings and section 8 housing that hasn't been gentrified yet. My building is next door to a homeless shelter and there's another one two blocks away. It's also the historical minority neighborhood, though that's not really the case anymore

there's actually a certain sect of northern cities that are very libertarian/white supremacy that have a lot of bike lanes and pro-biking. there's a lot of lawyers n doctors really into tri-athalons and $5000 bike tournaments there

even salt lake city has more bike lanes than most cities

It's easy to get nice things built when the people holding the purse strings are sure that the beneficiaries will mostly be like them (white).

Yep. Bike and pedestrian infrastructure in the southern US gets very loud push-back from people concerned about "crime" coming into their neighborhoods.

See the earlier discussion about why Atlanta has such poor public transit.

When sound transit was trying to get light rail built from seattle to bellevue (super expensive richy rich land) the owner of the big high end mall and a bunch of property literally brought law suits up to the state supreme court to get it stopped for bullshit reasons but the end of the day real reason which was admitted at various times is "we dont want the seattle poor and homeless coming over to the east side"
