Yeah basically, 95% of the time my workflow is wake Deck from sleep -> walk to couch -> turn TV on. Even if the boot animation played every time you woke it up I'd never see it

I only bought most of the animations because I have no idea what else to spend all these drat points on.

You can either spend it on deck animations or emotes from porn games, those are the only two options.

oh drat i learned something to put in the OP

i launched game and it's no longer playing audio! why?

in desktop mode, launch it and look at the icon on the task bar, you may have misclicked and done an OS-level mute on the game. i think this is persistent to gaming mode and reboots.

edit: question: what does it mean to be the 'main monitor'? even if you make a tv the main monitor, apps still launch on the deck screen. so how do you change the main screen for purposes of where a new app launches

Can confirm the desktop mode app volume is persistent between gaming mode and reboots. I have it for certain multiplayer games to be quieter while I also have voice chat in a background app.

I'm getting this issue where occasionally my Duck won't boot up. The chime will play, and the fan will spin momentarily, but then nothing happens.

Holding "..." and volume down for about 10 seconds makes the boot screen pop up, but I have no idea why it gets stuck in the non-boot cycle in the first place. Any ideas why?

It doesn't seem to be related to battery level or being plugged in, just happens maybe 1 out of every 5 or 6 times it's shut down.

Do you have custom boot animations turned on and set to shuffle in which case maybe it’s just eating poo poo loading a bad video until you press buttons to bypass it

I thought this was easy to do but was like I should verify the exact steps first, and then found out that Valve seemingly redid the entire custom control settings since I first got my Deck and it's now confusing as gently caress and I couldn't figure it out lol

Try this: Go into the controller (Steam Input) settings, Edit Layout, Joysticks, and set Left Joystick Behavior to Directional Pad. Go into the settings (gear icon) here and verify that Directional Pad Layout is set to "8 Way (Overlap)", which should be the default. Then for each of the left stick directions assign the commands to the dpad directions. Go into the settings (gear icon) for each of those and change Regular Press to Double Press. This should have you dash whenever you use the left stick.

Now, if you want it so that the left stick only makes you dash when you push it all the way--I'm not quite sure about that. Typically what you do is assign an Outer Ring Command to the run button, but since the game doesn't have a run button you need to make it re-press the dpads. I would try doing everything above, but leaving the left stick commands as Regular Press, and then add an Action Set Layer that changes all of them to Double Press, and assign the Outer Ring Command to Hold Action Set Layer using that layer. That said, I don't know if the directions will "re-fire" correctly.

For Gaming Mode you can't, the Deck will default to whatever monitor is plugged in. If you have the Dock is defaults to whatever is plugged into DP first, then HDMI if there's no DP plugged in.

Holy smokes reimaging my wife's Deck was way more of a pain in the rear end than my own. First it wouldn't boot for a while, just blinking three times. Thought I hosed up the battery cable so I reseated it, no change. Finally got it to boot after holding the power button for 10 seconds and plugging it in, but apparently it doesn't want to fast charge off my 65W Thinkpad charger. So it took an hour or so for it to finally get enough battery that I could boot it into BIOS, unplug it, plug in the recovery image, and then have enough battery left over to actually reimage it.

At least it's done. Interestingly, side by side, it seems like her Deck has more thermal padding underneath the shield than mine did. That very well may contribute to some JSAUX backs fitting and others not.

I honestly have no idea anymore, I feel like valve took what was a very easy interface for customizing controls, including adding extra inputs to other inputs or creating macros etc, and made it impetrenable as gently caress

here's a trick for getting the old one: turn on the setting that says "launch games in big picture mode when controller connected" it'll launch in old big picture mode
you can see the old controller thingy
maybe it only works in windows idk

I wouldn't necessarily blame the Deck for this part. Laptop chargers are notorious for only working with the intended laptop depsire being USB-C and having a label that suggests useful voltages. Mine won't charge anything else either.

Nope, completely stock unit, only change is a 512gb sd card. I've seen other people on the internet with this issue, but the only solution I found was the "..." plus volume down combo, but no indication as to why that works or what the underlying cause is

I also wouldn't blame the Deck. I found out later it was a random USB-C cable plugged into I don't even know what.

This doesn't work; you actually have it the wrong way around. The "Double Press" setting in Steam Input doesn't affect how many inputs are sent to the game, it affects how you need to press the button to send the input. In the example you're giving above, it means the game would receive a single directional input if, and only if, I pressed the direction twice. After trying your suggestion I tried setting something up using "Regular Press" and "Long Press" commands tied to the same direction, but the game read it as a single press, and "Start Press" and "Long Press" tied to the same direction just resulted in a small twitch in the direction.

Whoops! You're totally right. I was reading the documentation on activators and wishful thinking lead me to misread that behavior.

OK, I would try to assign multiple commands (for completeness, using the "Add extra command" option in the gear menu, but you know that already). For the first command I'd use Start Press, and for the second use a Regular Press, but go into the Settings for it and change Fire Start Delay. I'd probably try 100 ms to start and adjust as needed.

I think that would do roughly the same as what you tried to do with Start Press and Long Press, but with Fire Start Delay you can adjust the timeout period as needed for the game to respond correctly.

Tried that. I don't think any extra/sub commands "hold" the button press, even if you continue holding the actual physical button you're pressing.

E: Might be worth trying the other way around? Have the extra/sub command trigger on "Start Press" and the main command be "Long Press"?

Honestly this sounds like some finicky behavior on the part of Steam Input. For extra commands I don't think the order that you set them should matter, but sometimes it does?

Anyways, glad it works!

Commander Keene

Specifically, I don't think extra/sub commands can "hold" an input, only the main command. This is probably intentional behavior, so that you can't be "holding" for example two opposite directions on the D-Pad at the same time, which has been known to completely gently caress up movement in games before. So you set the main command to trigger after the extra command so that the one that gets "held" is the last input and suddenly the thing works correctly.

Man, Dredge is one of the best "Deck games" I've played. It feels like it was consciously designed for it - the art design looks great at this scale, it runs perfectly, interface is well sized, battery life is real good, which all reminds me of Cult of the Lamb. It's also a spooky game with fishing I like that gets weird. I also enjoy that time only moves when you're doing something.

Game's great, I like it a lot.

I control my deck using an Xbox One controller connected over Bluetooth when it's docked, but I've been caught out a couple of times by the controller battery running out while I play. Is there a way for the controller battery level to be reported to the Deck so I can get a little early warning when it's almost dead?
