There's zero interest among the people in charge to make sure the every day building blocks of a society are produced because they're too busy chasing the financialization dragon. we can't get mulch, we can't get cold medicine, we couldn't get eggs for a while there. We're just going to have rotating supply chain disasters while the people capable of fixing the problem and getting the widgets made spend their time trading instruments back and forth for ever-escalating prices. very cool

I guess now they just deny preventative care instead of simply coding the free care as diagnostic which isn't covered.

Oh cool $13 million in city money handed over to a for-profit entity to bribe them into running a for-profit grocery store (in a location that recently got wiped out by a flood).

Definitely a good use of public funds and not a corrupt handover of tax dollars to private interests when the city could have just run a grocery store there.

I mean, that's basically how collapse works. poo poo doesn't just fall apart overnight. Things just get shittier in small ways every day. Eventually you stop on the way from your 16 hour a day job to your sleeping coffin and think "I don't remember things being this bad when I was younger," and that's that.

Yes but it will be normal too when a competing system takes their place and their legitimacy will be based on things working “normally”.

Sometime after it becomes completely normal that USPS does not provide reliable long distance communication, or normal that it doesn’t exist, it will be normal that letters are sent through China Post, and because that will work, it won’t be a shocking outrage and invasion of our beautiful society but the restoration of normalcy.

One of the funniest things about food deserts is they've never been real. The definition was jerry rigged to exclude tons of places with food, including frozen vegetables. It was entirely about having fresh food at stores. And then when stores opened offering that, surprise, people didn't want or couldn't afford that stuff anyways

So yeah like most other things it's all just a big scheme for getting dollars to favored friends, just like minority owned businesses and whatever else. Some real fun examples of that with the legal weed stores and the govt unsuccessfully trying to keep out all entirely white businesses with a minority front person

It's amazing how low the income threshold is for the medicaid cliff (bc it's based on the absurdly low federal poverty levels).

I read that NM might pass a statewide medicaid opt-in, but the story didn't say whether there'd be subsidies & made it sound as if it'd only be $100/month cheaper than private insurance. (I think the example they used was $500/month instead of $600/month.)

Hell yes

I don't think the medicaid stuff will be a tidal wave any more than the fake news eviction tidal wave. When my kid got thrown off medicaid each year, it required a state employee to make a determination and send a letter. Heck, it took until June one year to do that, in normal pre COVID times. So presumably that's going to be the same thing in many states - people will just wait nervously for letters than never arrive before next enrollment period.

Of course some states will simply mass kick off everyone at once but those people probably voted wrong so no one will care
