This is my uncle's RV that he travels the country in. He put a Cadillac 500 in it, front wheel drive.

He bought it with a blown motor, originally an Olds 455. So he got a Caddy 500 for it.

Story with the motor is, there was a 500 specialist in California so he sent the motor there to be rebuilt. Well the old codger at the shop that did the work had a stroke right when he started work on the motor. He lived, but they found tumors in his brain and gave him 3 months to live. My uncle offered to take the motor back, but the guy insisted on doing it. As my uncle put it "so he rebuilt my motor after having a stroke and tumors in his brain" and when he got the motor back it knocked straight away and was no good so he sent it back. By then the original guy had died so someone else did the work. He got it back again and this time it was burning shitloads of oil and had no power. Sent it back again, got it back, and again it was poo poo. So he just said gently caress it, took the loss on what he paid them already and rebuilt the motor himself. He's put over 40k miles on it since then.

And oh yeah he tows a mint condition 1989 Civic Si behind it, he didn't have it with him at the time tho.

1) unfortunate, it was some Japanese guy drifting one of those huge modern Rolls Royces round a cone drift track.

2) I believe he did it because he's being investigated in a $258 billion racketeering lawsuit. But the other thing is equally as likely considering how poo poo that site has become. :v:

So that's neat, but I'm confused and know jackshit about RV's.

Its got dual axles in the back, but it's front wheel drive? I know Caddy 500's came front wheel drive (I think all of them?), it just seems weird to me that it wouldn't be the double axles in back that'd be powered. Was it front wheel drive from the factory or did your uncle convert it?

It was FWD from the factory with a Toronado motor and front end.

This is the rear suspension

That's just an image I took off the internet to show how the rear suspension works. It actually came stock with drum brakes lol.

My uncle put discs on the front of the dual rears of his, but left drums on the far rear because he said he didn't need discs on all four.

He also mentioned it rides much better than most other truck based RVs, easy to see why.

Fun Shoe
Yeah it's just a TH425.

These things have an absolute cultlike following. The owners claim they're fantastic drivers.
Because of the front drive and independent rear air suspension the holding tanks are right at the rear axle's centerline putting the center of mass pretty low for a rv.

He's an OG AI dude. When he was young he worked at a speed shop building funny cars and dragsters in the 60's, then went on to teach auto shop at a high school until he retired.

He's also an OG Honda fanboy, he got a first gen Civic when they first came out and has owned and worked on Hondas ever since. I remember as a kid watching him rebuild Honda motors and being in awe of his knowledge.

It's not that bad in the GMC. You can almost walk the engine & drive train out through the front by removing the panels below the windshields.

These GMCs were designed as RVs off the drawing board, not converted truck chassis or built on a cutaway. Low center of gravity. They have a well-deserved cult following. I've wanted one for years but lack the room and the supportive spouse. You uncle rules.

Really cool video on making DIY graphene in reasonable quantities. They only do a few flexural strength tests using it as filler in epoxy and it does much better than graphite or carbon black, so it seems promising maybe as an addition when making fiberglass or carbon-fiber parts.

Yeah, interestingly the Cadillac (et al) FWD cars of the 70's used a longitudinal engine setup like that picture shows, the LS4 is the transverse LS. I mean you COULD do it, but you'd be going through extra work for no benefit. Best spend that extra effort/money on a twin turbo setup :getin:

So I got a stupid idea while chilling on probation yesterday. Doing an engine swap on an old :ussr: car that my dad used to own. It came with a neat aircooled V4 rwd setup, but sadly had the service intervals of a motorcycle due to lovely materials and machining quality.

I thought dropping in a modern-ish FWD 3-cyl might work, but thankfully there's a cutaway photo online and it seems that the axles are way too forward for any FWD transmission to reach. Does anything non-exotic come to mind that could work?

It's not gunna turn the right way. You'd be able to go hella fast backwards though.

What you need is a 911 gearbox and whatever you can find to attach to that and fit in the space.

Or just let it hang out.
