True. I mean if they're grilled when a group of x number of people all come in claiming 9,900 dollars each I bet the OP would crumple like a brown paper bag.

I used to work surveillance at a casino, and the regulars in the lower premium areas would constantly try and dodge around the mandatory reporting amounts when cashing out.

Once, a regular handed off a $5k chip to another regular, who they obviously knew by sight but weren't friends, to cash out for her.

The other regular promptly walked straight out the casino.

Strangely, security weren't particularly sympathetic.

Also if those "To Catch a Smuggler" shows are at all accurate, if it was at all legit, it's a nothingburger of a conversation.
"I have declared $20k, it is a down payment for a house, here is my paystub and bank statement to show it is legally gained income."
"Ok thanks you can go, we are gonna go grill that 80-year-old lady who is trying to transport clandestine apples in her purse."

But yeah when they see a husband and wife each carrying just under the limit they start salivating and bring out the thumbscrews.

Bored now...
AITA; Not doing anything for husband’s birthday

quote:

Thanks for reading! backstory: Married 3 years, together 15. One child. I’ve always been big on doing nice things for my husbands birthday. One year was 1000 dollar golf clubs, a mini surprise party, decorate the house with 200 balloons, big expensive steak dinners. I use to have to save a lot to do it, but seeing him happy like that was worth it.

Fast forward to my birthday last year: I was one month postpartum. I had an emergency C-section and was recovering. I had brought up causally for my birthday i would of liked something of my daughter, either a card or her birthstone. A card with her little handprint would of been cute. He looked at me and said, don’t expect a thing this year I have no money. I was shocked because - he infact has money and just spent 2000 on a bachelor party. But - again, I wasn’t expecting much. I didn’t make a big deal. My family however, we’re pissed. My sister had asked him to spilt something with her for me and he said no. No explanation just no. So she came over with family and decorated the house for me. In the end, because he saw how upset my family was for how he was acting towards me( more than just birthday stuff) he gave me a gift card he knowing I couldn’t use.. whatever.

Anyway fast forward to now. A lot more tension between us. He again, told me not to expect Mother’s Day gifts/ that he has to pay his credit card and I just nodded my head. BUT That’s when he’s said so what are we doing for my birthday???? I was shocked but instinctively said “ don’t expect anything I have no money” He looked at me like I crushed his soul and was like wow really. I’m like I’m on mat leave where would I have money for you? Now, he’s stomping his feet saying that “I do nothing for him”

AITA?

Yup, and only because the first regular didn't want to provide ID when she cashed out.

Regular 1 had won money over the reporting limit. They wanted to avoid having to report it so they broke it up into two stacks.

And remember: Regular 1 and Regular 2 are not friends. They don't really know each other. They recognize one another but there is no real bond here.

Regular 1: "I don't want to bother showing my ID. Go cash this out for me and give it back to me later." -Gives 5K casino chip-
Regular 2: "Sssuuuure. Yes. I will do this. Excuse me." -Exeunt, pursued by raucous laughter-
Regular 1: "Security! I have been stolen from!"
Security: "And why did you give them the chip? Which we know you did, voluntarily, because casinos have a trillion cameras."
Regular 1: "Uhhhh..."

The only question is, is the husband just a run of the mill rear end in a top hat who doesn't want to spend money and effort on his wife's birthday, or does he actually not have any money left because he blew it all on gambling/drugs/other women/funkopops?

They didn't. Regular 1 won 5k+, but apparently at some point after that you have to give ID to prove you are who you say you are when turning the chips into cash. They assumed Regular 2 would turn the other half of their winnings into cash and then give it to them. They assumed poorly.
Security doesn't care because the Casino still got their money (5k isn't even a rounding error if the place is pulling in money worth a drat) and Regular 1 was trying to get around having to show an ID so they aren't exactly sympathetic.

I assume if they showed ID the casino would then report to the state that $NAME had $5k worth of income and then they'd have to pay their delinquent child support or something?

Yeah if you win more than a certain amount the casino can't cash you out until you fill out tax documents. So the person was either trying to avoid taxes specifically, or recorded income that could affect things like liens or child support requirements.

Of course for the average gambler, if they actually kept track of their losses, it would more than offset any wins in terms of calculating tax burden. But then they'd have to admit to losing most of the time.

No, this was in Australia. It's to do with money laundering. Staff document transactions $10k or over, or anything they consider suspicious.

Gambling winnings aren't taxed here either. There's a millionaire in Tasmania, David Walsh, who made his fortune with computer algorithms for horse racing. The ATO tried to claim he owed back tax on the winnings, with little success.

(Also, lol, $5k rounding errors. This is a casino that discovered a dragon's trove of gold coins under the floor beneath a row of pokie machines during a redecoration.)
