I never had issues getting invested in a game's story, I'm always willing to let it try, and if it succeeds then well done. Then again that's one of the things I play games FOR is the stories, so I'm generally willing to accept whatever they are trying to tell at face value.

Something that helps with Spider-man is that it gets you invested in Octavius as a person because [spoiler]you get to do many minigames where you fix all his stuff, so it gives you a sense of hope as you are spotting all these potential overflow errors and other issues that could end up driving him to madness, but then the inevitable happens because he simply grows impatient and panics and moves so fast he leaves you in the dust, so his downfall feels much more visceral as it gives the player the idea that "I could have done something". Even though you know how it's going to turn out because it always does, it gets you involved in his development in a more direct way.

I had to walk around a viking hall as a child and was forced to do 3 (or was it 5?) interactions where it was just pressing a button and watching me play a ball game or whatever for 20 seconds. Then another cutscene started and just went on and on and I lost all patience.

Okami has to be the recordholder for lovely, non-interactive openings. It's like 20 straight minutes of the backstory being "narrated" to you by a cricket with a Banjo Kazooie voice while text and inscrutable "storybook" illustrations scroll across the screen. 100% unskippable. I honestly thought something had gone terribly wrong when I loaded it up for the first time, because surely the opening couldn't really be this bad. The rest of the game is pretty good, though!

Annoying that in Ragnarok there is not a quick way to the Map. It's either hold the touchpad down (works only half the time) or tap it to go into the menus and scroll over to it. Why the map isn't the default option for the menu screen instead of gear, I don't know. It's not like you need super convenient access to gear because the game doesn't allow re-equipping during combat anyway.

I had some luck with this where about 75% of the time I could get to the map by pressing on the left side of the touch pad. But it's awkward to hit that in any scenario. I don't think that was remappable.

But I hate, HATE, HATE the 180 turnaround on the touchpad. You want to know the last thing I want to do in the middle of a fight surrounded by enemies? Attempt to swipe my fat thumb gently up on the 2 square inches of real estate, without in any way pressing in the pad, and pulling up the menu or map by mistake.

Rollerdome is beautiful to look at and the animations and tricks and poo poo look great and badass. It also has tons of contextual world building, things that you learn on your own without the game force-feeding you exposition. But man is it a bitch to play. Aiming would be great using mouse and keyboard, but good luck doing all those tricks holding like the F key at the same time as the shift key and then pressing arrow keys. But on a controller, it's still a pain in the rear end. It has the sort of trick complexity that Tony Hawk had but it has this added mechanic of shooting and time slowing and dodging in addition to the Tony Hawk stuff. It's not really a hard game so far; I just feel like I'm doing everything so sloppily and awkwardly and jankily and the amount of buttons and thumbsticks and triggers that need to be used in conjunction is a bit too demanding.

A lot of jrpgs remasters these days usually include an R2 button toggle for the walk speed to go x2 or x4 times faster, and that should be the default for all jrpgs really. Chrono Cross also has a really baffling extension to this idea where you can hit the L2 button to walk half as fast for some reason.

Also every screenshot and video I saw of Valhalla made it look like a grey, rainy dour world you run around in which wasn't appealing to me at all after the sunny bright views of Greece and Egypt.

So, in Odessey you sail on the open sea and can go pretty straight towards your destination, but in Valhalla it's all rivers all the time, so you have to zig zag across the map instead, which obviously takes more time. River travel also means that there are more opportunities for your boat get stuck, so in an attempt to avoid that they put the auto-travel lane further out from shore. This just happened to be too far out to trigger most of the docks when you sail past them, even if you are on their side of the river. Also every island is like 3x too big for what it contains, so the map is just needlessly huge.

AC Valhalla just strengthened my belief that a lot of open world games would benefit from instead having an old school rpg world map, where it instead changes to a different scale and you might get random encounters. Because this style of the huge empty desert with the occasional oasis of stuff doesn't really work for me.

There was a pretty epic shanty in the Beowulf 360 game when you decide to summon Grendel to kill it. It comes when people get too loud to go on a rampage, so Beowulf leads his men in a raucous drinking song (that has some gross lyrics but its in character for the types of people they are) to deliberately piss off the Grendel. It works well because it works the mechanic in where you spur on your men during combat or puzzles, so it feels pretty epic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHpPVSvk3RE

With Dad of Boy specifically I just couldn't accept it because they were trying to make me get the feels for Kratos, the guy who killed people praying to him so he could take the things they were offering to him. And even so, it's not like God of War hasn't had effective emotional moments before, but it's well-framed and presented because of the contrast to the violence and bad decisions and then the story moves on because all six of the old games together are like 30-40 hours total.

DoB 1 and 2 are 120 loving hours of Kratos slowly turning towards the camera and intoning "fatherhood.......is hard." and then the reviewers/players/etc explosively cumming over how deep the emotions are.

Relatedly, the desperate need to make Kratos a Good Guy means they have to slander the Aesir and it's hilarious that even with two very long games, they still can't make Thor or Odin more of a bastard than the fucker you're playing as.
