So if I was looking to do a modded campaign starting post Helm but pre-Clans would either BTA or BEX be better?

BTA is post-Tukayyid, barely pre-FedCom Civil War.

If you're looking for rediscovered lostech but pre-Clans, BEX is your suit. You've got several timeline periods to start from, and the game is really good about slowly introducing tech availability as it filters out in 3030s.

I have a question for any of our resident mission/modding mavens...

I'm running a flashpoint in BEX (Falcon's Fury) and it's locking me into near-garbage tier IS heavy and medium robots vs Jade Falcon heavies and assaults.

FU*K THAT. Where in the contract .json can I just comment out the hard-coded mech selections?

I JUST WANNA TAKE MY OWN ROBOTS AND WATCH THEM BURST INTO FLAME INSTEAD. Hell, I'd take my medium-only jump/stab lance over a loving stock++ Treb/Griffin/SH/Marauder any day of the week.

Thanks!

e- I see them in the unitDefId stuff, but I don't want to hose the file with the wrong syntax if it needs to be replaced... I've looked through AMW's guide and that Contract Parser guide, I'm just not clear on it. :shrug:

OK, so, you want to find the contracts file- I don't have BEX, so I'll use the BTA Heavy Metal flashpoint module as an example.
The file I'm editing is part of the Morgan Kell flashpoint:
\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\BATTLETECH\Mods\Heavy Metal Flashpoint Module\contracts\morganKell\c_fp_morganKell_a1_simpleBattle.json

You want to find the line that says something like this:
"teamName": "Player 1",
"faction": "Player1sMercUnit",

Somewhere under all that you'll find a line listing the fixed units you're mad at. In this case for Kell, he's driving an Archer
"unitDefId": "mechdef_archer_ARC-T_fp_morganKell",

You want to replace the part that says "mechdef_archer_ARC-T_fp_morganKell" with the name of any other mechdef file.
The vanilla ones are all here: \SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\BATTLETECH\BattleTech_Data\StreamingAssets\data\mech

Modded ones will be all over the place, but you should be able to search through easily just by searching for any file starting with mechdef_. you DON'T need the .json part when you paste the name in the contracts file.

Thanks! But what do I throw into the file to just select my own and not have any of them pre-set? Just wipe (for example) the "mechdef_marauder_GDL_MAD-3R" entry and leave :emptyquote:'s?

My two ER-ML PHX-3Ks are thirsty for Clan-back, and I don't think changing it to "mecdef_PhoenixHawk_PHX-3K" would take it from my inventory. I appreciate your robo-sageness tho Gwaihir.

Oh, right, on that case just replace the entry with one of the ones below it. If there's two fixed spots the next two should be open for your player inventory machines. I think it just blanks stuff out mostly.

I remember it being pretty strong if you can get a direct hit off, even if the splash damage is a bit meh.

Could be wrong though.

Interesting you say that when the tool tip recommends aiming at their feet.

It just seemed like a lot of heat AND required LOS.

Being able to soften up targets behind a mountain range is the big advantage of the Arrow IV, it seems to me, and so far the game hasn't thrown many of them at me in return.

I think that's because the legs have less armour but will still result in a kill, but not sure?

I've seen it one-shot heavy mechs from full when hitting back torso. IIRC there's both a splash and direct damage component, like in BT for that matter too.

e: It's definitely not as strong as multiple gauss or PPC build, but it's still pretty good.

Yeah if I remember correctly in YAW, artillery is more useful when splashing into weak spots (so landing the shell behind or under something can do a ton more damage than slamming a direct hit depending on the Mech.) Honestly they're more like support weapons to quickly open up a breach so your other weapons or someone else can take advantage of it. Arrow IVs are way better at just deleting something

Been playing bta again and I'm having an issue I'm hoping someone has some ideas for: I can't interact with some equipment in the mech bay. I'm not talking the hardcoded items some mechs have, basic stuff.

Like I can remove the medium laser in the right arm but not the left, can't interact with anything in the torso at all. Stripping all equipment will remove the items and I can drop new ones in, but then I can't touch the equipment again

It makes tweaking fittings extremely annoying because I have to start from scratch every time I want to see how some change looks

This is a long-standing issue that is another quirk of injecting a billion tons of poo poo into HBS's creaky engine until it's about to break. It just happens periodically, with increasing likelihood during long sessions, and is also almost guaranteed to happen if you work on BA and switch back to mechs. Restarting the game almost always fixes it.

really getting a killer light mech lance rolling in BTA is great. Aether on an Ember with all small X-pulses, Wulfbanes on his commando with SRM spam, Floppy on the superpowered Raven you get from the revamped Flashpoint -- they're all zipping around the battlefield at minimum 7 EVA and deleting things with one shot in the back

in fact really their only weakness so far is that the BTA AI fuckin LOVES suicide DFAs

Combine HAGs with normal Gauss cannons that fire first. The Gauss punches a hole and the HAGs crit everything in that section to oblivion.

DFA is one of *those* abilities in games like this which is nearly worthless for the player because it practically guarantees you'll get lit up, but is great for the AI because it doesn't care about repairs or pilots surviving
