You may not have said it in this thread, but you and one or two others have been all over this tiring "so brave of you to say that" bullshit that's gotten beaten to death on SA. We all get it: most pickups are used as cars, never for pickup stuff. We all know.

It's not defensive, it's me typing out an eye roll for you to read.

To add fuel to the towing fire, to the best of my knowledge, a 5 speed Honda Acty is rated for 600kg 770lbs in the bed and 1000kg 100lbs towed. I would be shocked if it could reach 30mph while towing a literal ton of poo poo behind it, but a 30 year old car that had 40hp and 35ft/lbs when new can tow slightly more than a base model 2023 Ford Maverick's 2000lb capacity

This is why we don't mix imperial and metric

My Acty is rated at 350kg in the bed and I’ve never looked up the towing capacity.

If you have very long legs your knees will be inside the dashboard in the Acty. Possibly you’ll be operating the windshield wipers with your feet.

Getting out is actually more awkward than just fitting in it because you have to wind your leg around the steering column, which sits between the brake and throttle pedals.

Best thing to do is just find one and ask to sit in it. I found the Mitsubishi Minicab to have even less space than the Acty, and the shifter was big-rig-like in its length and throw which meant I kept slamming myself in the knee in 4th and reverse, and I definitely don’t have long legs. In addition, the engine is between the seats which makes it feel more cramped. The Acty has the engine under the bed.

I see my error, I'm mixing units, mea culpa. 1000lbs tow and 770lbs in the bed, not kilograms

So not as good as a Maverick, but illustrative to the point of tow ratings being made up bullshit. Maybe if you live near steep grades or need to tow actual weight, they mean something, but to those of us moving light things on relatively flat ground, they're lies

American tow ratings are set for the lowest common denominator. They have to compensate for someone strapping 80 sqft of half inch boiler plate to a couple of wheelbarrow axles, loading it up with 3 scrap washing machines and stopping to pick up a dead buck lying by the side of the road.
In places with mandatory trailer brakes, trailer inspections, and trailer licensing, tow ratings for the same vehicle are generally higher.

Saftey is an issue, but that varies state by state. It's the automakers themselves, they generally don't even bother rating sedans or hatchbacks for towing in the US. Look at most sedans and then the sister CUV that is built on the same platform, with the same engine, and the same transmission; you'll find that a 3" lift is often the only way that that combination of components gets a tow rating at all. It's an excuse for automakers to sell more light trucks because they have looser safety and emissions standards than an actual car :tinfoil:

No, you know what? That's literally the design ethos of everyone's favorite car, the PT Cruiser. I might be crazy, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong

On commercial vehicles like the kei trucks, and the various small cabover trucks we use in lieu of 2500/3500HD pickups yeah, but on Ranger/Hilux etc utes it's usually dealer fit via 3rd party at best, or buy cab/chassis and seek your own, but yeah, your basic point is right. "Flatdecks" as we call them are super useful at all kinds of poo poo you don't think of. For example, they make an excellent workbench out in the field, and are also super useful for moving oversize stuff, maybe not on road, but at least around site/farm or whatever.

That particular one is probably a 2.5t, but up to 4.5t exist from memory. Obviously, none of them are fast, and would probably be considered slow death traps on the US interstate, but they're fuckin trucks, for carrying heavy stuff, not fast.

It doesn't make much of a difference to the importer what country it's being sourced from. As long as you meet your 25y/15y import rules. I guess it's just with the euro being a strong currency, the bargains are going to be scarcer, and the collectible cars are collectible over there too, keeping values high.
