While the US is giving a lot, they're deliberately hanging back and trying to push Europe to the fore - both because Ukraine is in Europe and to give them a chance to shine without being overshadowed by the US. The problem is that Europe as a group has very little to give because they haven't been spending properly on defense for decades, simultaneously relying on the US and then bitching about US dominance.

The reason they don't is political/ they're deterred by Russia's nuclear threats.

The norm should not be that every country has hundreds of spare unwanted tanks just sitting around in storage. US defense spending is excessive, but most European countries have severely deteriorated their militaries through years of budgetary neglect. In my country it got as low as 1.1% of GDP, which was not enough to maintain a credible defense capability. The army had to get rid of all of it's tanks and most of its artillery, the Navy was reduced to 20% of it's old size, and so on. I don't suggest we should have remained on cold war levels of spending like the US has, but some happy medium would have been prudent. As an example, we currently operate 18 Leopards in a joint battalion with Germany. In 1990 we had 913. That's insane - all of the heavy equipment that all NATO countries combined have scraped together for Ukraine could have been easily supplied by the 1990 Dutch army, and plenty where that came from.

Now gently caress off e - At the bottom of the articles is this Germany, Poland and Ukraine said they would create a hub to repair Leopard tanks used in Ukraine, which could open at the end of May. Canada said it would provide a further C$39 million (£23.26 million) in lethal aid, including sniper rifles and radios. Handy! Drive over the border, get fixed without fear and drive back in again. That's an excellent channel. They do a week by week series, supplemented with 3-4 short videos expanding on specific topics or people. They're currently running possibly YouTube's best history series on WW2 week by week, with an accompanying War On Humanity series covering the civilian casualty toll and more detail on the Holocaust as it happens than is possibly good for you. I definitely appreciate the ironic tension between really good animated maps of the front lines on a divisional scale juxtaposed with death tolls from bombing raids and extermination camps. Gotta keep perspective, war sucks.

I only got the numbers for 2020 but out of 197.000 military personnel total, 39.000 are officers and 95.000 NCOs. All that brain power for 46.000 enlisted and a sad handful of volunteers.

The reason they don't is political/ they're deterred by Russia's nuclear threats. Ukraine uses different gauges than the west, meaning that all aid has to be shipped to the border, offloaded from western locomotives, put back on Ukrainian trains, and then taken across the border. This is a huge bottleneck and not something “easily solved.” There are plans to get Ukraine on the EU gauge but that’s a massive undertaking even without a war going on and enemies actively shooting at your trains/power infrastructure. NATO supply trains have to stop and pass inspection at each national border, even for countries within NATO. The “simple fix” is to get 100% of NATO countries to agree to let them pass. That will probably happen by the end of the year—maybe—as long as there are no objections. Logistics may sometimes be simple, but it is never easy.

jaete posted:Yep, now it is. But that's very recent: This change was caused by a changed accounting standard. During the cold war, Finland wanted to downplay military expenditures to keep the Soviets happy, and all possible expenses were moved to different departments. In 2021, as a part of harmonizing with NATO standards (which we have been doing for a decade now), we switched to reporting military expenditures by NATO rules, which caused that jump.

Not with that attitude. Also I said apply, not join. Putin would hear the ole Metal Gear Solid alert noise if Japan just applied (with no intention to follow through). Now I'm curious about Article 9 of the Japanese constitution. ARTICLE 9. (1) Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes. (2) In order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be sustained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized. I wonder if the definition of "threat" includes "just a bit of international trolling". Well Russia already found the obvious workaround. Special Peace Operation.
