I saw that post. While the Meissner effect is real and can be used to levitate stuff, I'm skeptical that you could levitate off the Earth's magnetic field. Like they say, it's far too weak: a few hundred Gauss, compared to the few thousand of a fridge magnet.

yep well that's a problem for Radar and his hyperlight superconducting ORB material to solve

Meissner effect does not require a large field strength, hence the usage of Earth's magnetic fields in the hypothesis. All fields will be expelled leading to the acceleration of the superconductor.

edit: it's not magnetic levitation in the way you're thinking, where two like poles will oppose each other strongly enough to levitate small objects. it's the expulsion of the magnetic field out of the bulk volume of the superconducting material. I do it as a classroom trick.

Isn't the Meissner effect dependent on the strength of the external magnetic field? Is the earths magnetic field strong enough to lift up anything as heavy as a bigfoot or chupacabra?

This suggests your levitation sphere at best could hold one or two post cards without falling down. The authors are aware of this, and vaguely suggest that the craft could "amplify" the local magnetic field.

If it's the craft doing the amplification, then this sounds like the craft is amplifying the field and pushing off of the amplified field: basically, the craft pushing off of itself. Without some other intervention I don't see how you could make that work.

I still think it's possible, you would just need some way to counteract the weight of the sphere. Maybe it would be easier on the magnets if you filled the sphere with something lighter than air, maybe something like helium. In fact, I think with enough helium you wouldn't even need the magnets. This is still beyond our understanding of physics but it might be possible for a Type II civilization.

yep but it also has a complicated dependence on the surface-to-volume ratio, with crystal-type materials doing better rather than grain/powder materials. hmmm.

Helium works because it makes the entire thing buoyant, it's just setting the neutral point to some altitude where the pressure inside is the same as the pressure outside

It's balloons the orbs was balloons all along

It also means you need to burn energy diving below the buoyancy point & staying locked

E: Mach 2 zeppelin is so advanced I suspect the helium bags inside don't make a super big difference

except magnus effect is proportional to the amount of friction caused by the movement of the sphere, which is already ruled out by the lack of a sonic boom

a metal sphere spinning quickly enough to stay aloft would be whistling like mad

I think it is his own little quest for immortality. If he was the scientist that actually broke this out into the open I would have to think his name would be remembered for a long long time. He's doing it in such a way with the Galileo project that he would get all the credit. Somehow getting disclosure from the government is not going to carry the same long term notoriety as independently gathering all new data and releasing a paper that conclusively proves aliens are here and beats the government to the punch. At the same time, he seems to be going about it the right way and maintains (at least publicly) the correct balance of skepticism and belief that an ideal scientist should. Because of that I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, for now, even if he is in it for selfish reasons.
