No Dem has won a statewide race in Texas since '94. Beto lost by 3% to Cruz in 2018 out of just over 8m voters. That's off prez-cycle, and 11m voted in the 2020 election, so the Dem's gonna need to pick up quite a bit more in 2024 to beat Ted. For Ted to lose would require a scenario where Dem pickups would be comically dominant.

It's both not nearly enough and as said likely the best he can do with the Republicans and conserva-Dems. Cruz is a bad candidate, Allred has a decent record in house elections, and Texas is almost certainly going to be closer than Ohio at the presidential level. It's not a top tier competitive seat like Arizona or Montana and Cruz will probably win anyway but it's not like donating millions to Amy McGrath, it makes sense to invest in Texas even if it doesn't immediately lead to a win.

Problem with Texas Democrats is that Blue Texas is the kind of pipe dream that makes Democrats open their wallets and double down on all the dumb poo poo that doesn't work while ignoring the conditions on the ground. Is there still a critical dearth of Spanish-language media while Republicans are actively radicalising people in every language?

The school didn't even sponsor or endorse the Satan Club. It's always weird when school officials go crazy to shut down things that weren't even happening during school or in a school endorsed club. It was just a bunch of edgy high schoolers who wanted to meet after school and the school flipped out and tried to shut it down. Utah's law requiring all pornographic websites verify the age of users with ID or a social security number goes into effect tomorrow. PornHub has decided they do not want to set up an age verification system or process ID requests that could open them up to litigation if they don't comply. So, they have blocked the website in the entire state of Utah. If you try to go to the site in Utah, you now get a 2-minute long video of adult film actress Cherie Deville asking Utahns to lobby their legislature to repeal the law and listing potential privacy and security concerns with websites being required to take your ID or social security number. Pornhub does currently comply with an age verification law in Louisiana, but it has less severe penalties for companies that fail to properly authenticate all their users than the Utah law. https://twitter.com/sltrib/status/1653149671466979329 quote:Pornhub Blocks All of Utah From Its Site Leon Trotsky 2012 fucked around with this message at 03:54 on May 2, 2023 |

And near as I can tell, it isn't even all that edgy. Like, it's a legit after school program, not just a bunch of 17-somethings smoking cloves and "Heh "-ing at each other. So realistically how hard will it be to find internet porn in Utah after the ID bill passes? Like ok pornhub won't be available but what about the 100 billion other porn sites? Will Utah have some kind of great firewall like China?

Ive been seeing news like this railroad-workers-union-win-sick-leave now, and I feel like the stories gotta be missing something. Because it feels really weird that "giant freight industry that's been exploiting everyone who works for them changed their mind after a big standoff where congress protected them from a strike because over the past few months everyones been asking nicely and they don't wanna look mean." So, what happened between the blocked strike and now? Are there details missing here? None of these articles go into a lot of detail over what the unions have been doing since the original strike was blocked.

The catch is the workers not allowed to call in sick are those who actually operate the trains. Those crews are slashed to the bone so if someone calls in that day the train can't run, which means the schedule is completely hosed Southwest Airlines style. The negotiations in the fall were between all the unions and the companies, for everyone getting sick leave. Here we are seeing only those workers where it is convenient for the companies to take paid sick leave receive it.

It says in the article. It was basically down a bunch of different things: - CSX has a new CEO. - The East Palestine disaster giving them bad PR. - The White House, Transportation Secretary, and Labor Secretary were lobbying them to secure a deal that granted paid sick leave. - Labor union negotiations continued and they eventually reached this agreement. - Labor unions agreed to table discussion about precision schedule railroading. - After CSX agreed to sick days, several other major railway companies followed suit. - There are some restrictions on engineers using sick days that they are still negotiating. The paid sick leave only applies to 8 of the 12 unions, the other 4 that primarily represent the engineers are still negotiating. The largest company says their intention is to cover everyone under the paid sick leave policy: quote:We now have agreements with eight of our 12 unions providing for paid sick days. Discussions are ongoing with the remaining four unions, including BMWE (Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees), and it is our intention to ultimately have paid sick day agreements in place covering our entire scheduled workforce. quote:After being roundly criticized for not offering paid sick days, the leading rail companies – BNSF, CSX, Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific – have granted many of their 93,000 workers four paid sick days a year through labor negotiations, with an option of taking three more paid sick days from personal days. The WGA went on strike this morning after negotiations failed with the major streaming studios over increased wages for writers working on streaming shows. There has been a major difference between what writers get paid on cable/network shows vs shows that are streaming-only and the studios have refused to budge much on their positions. https://twitter.com/WGAWest/status/1653242408195457025?s=20

I really hope it goes well for them. There has been a sharp increase in the percentage of WGA writers making the union minimum wage compared to the last time they went on strike and it sure looks like a strike is the only feasible way to reverse that trajectory.

This town sells more lotto tickets than anywhere else in the state. If you stop at one of the two gas stations in that town it'll be packed with Utah residents who drove up just to play scratch-offs. I guess now the parking lot will also be full of people jacking it to their cell phones.
