No Dem has won a statewide race in Texas since '94. Beto lost by 3% to Cruz in 2018 out of just over 8m voters. That's off prez-cycle, and 11m voted in the 2020 election, so the Dem's gonna need to pick up quite a bit more in 2024 to beat Ted.

For Ted to lose would require a scenario where Dem pickups would be comically dominant.

Capitol: A building or complex of buildings in which any legislature meets.
Capital: A city designated as a legislative seat by the government or some other authority, often the city in which the government is located; otherwise the most important city within a country or a subdivision of it.

Bernie Sanders is likely going to announce that his Senate Committee has a reached a deal for a bipartisan bill to raise the minimum wage on Thursday.

The bill is designed to be something that can pass both Houses, so it will likely only raise the minimum wage to $10 to $11 per hour. Unclear if this agreement extends to the House or not.

Seems to be mostly symbolic because essentially no jobs are paying the federal minimum wage anymore. It was about 1.4% in 2021 and will likely be similar or even lower now if they moved it to ~$10 because of inflation and the labor shortage resulting in even traditionally minimum wage jobs, like McDonalds, paying $16 to $18 per hour minimum now.

It's both not nearly enough and as said likely the best he can do with the Republicans and conserva-Dems. Now if he could get his bill to somehow remove the ridiculously low minimum wage for tipped positions too that would be great. It's like $2.15 an hour in some areas.

Am I a manipulative abuser in real life, or do I just roleplay one on the Internet for fun? You decide!
Cruz is a bad candidate, Allred has a decent record in house elections, and Texas is almost certainly going to be closer than Ohio at the presidential level. It's not a top tier competitive seat like Arizona or Montana and Cruz will probably win anyway but it's not like donating millions to Amy McGrath, it makes sense to invest in Texas even if it doesn't immediately lead to a win.

Utah's law requiring all pornographic websites verify the age of users with ID or a social security number goes into effect tomorrow. PornHub has decided they do not want to set up an age verification system or process ID requests that could open them up to litigation if they don't comply. So, they have blocked the website in the entire state of Utah.

If you try to go to the site in Utah, you now get a 2-minute long video of adult film actress Cherie Deville asking Utahns to lobby their legislature to repeal the law and listing potential privacy and security concerns with websites being required to take your ID or social security number.

Pornhub does currently comply with an age verification law in Louisiana, but it has less severe penalties for companies that fail to properly authenticate all their users than the Utah law.

https://twitter.com/sltrib/status/1653149671466979329

quote:

Pornhub Blocks All of Utah From Its Site

People in Utah who visit Pornhub will now be greeted by adult performer Cherie DeVille asking them to tell their representatives to change their age verification law.

In response to a new law that requires porn sites to verify users’ ages, Pornhub has completely disabled its websites for people located in Utah.

As of today, anyone accessing Pornhub from a Utah-based IP address doesn’t see the Pornhub homepage, but instead is met with a video of Cherie DeVille, adult performer and member of the Adult Performer Advocacy Committee, explaining that they won’t be able to visit the site.

“As you may know, your elected officials in Utah are requiring us to verify your age before allowing you access to our website,” DeVille says. “While safety and compliance are at the forefront of our mission, giving your ID card every time you want to visit an adult platform is not the most effective solution for protecting our users, and in fact, will put children and your privacy at risk.”

DeVille continues:

“In addition, mandating age verification without proper enforcement gives platforms the opportunity to choose whether or not to comply. As we've seen in other states, this just drives traffic to sites with far fewer safety measures in place. Very few sites are able to compare to the robust Trust and Safety measures we currently have in place. To protect children and user privacy, any legislation must be enforced against all platforms offering adult content. The safety of our users is one of our biggest concerns. We believe that the best and most effective solution for protecting children and adults alike is to identify users by their device and allow access to age-restricted materials and websites based on that identification. Until a real solution is offered, we have made the difficult decision to completely disable access to our website in Utah. Please contact your representatives before it is too late and demand device-based verification solutions that make the internet safer while also respecting your privacy.”

Utah Governor Spencer Cox signed SB 287: Online Pornography Viewing Age Requirements into law in March. It will go into effect on May 2.

“A commercial entity that knowingly and intentionally publishes or distributes material harmful to minors on the Internet from a website that contains a substantial portion of such material shall be held liable if the entity fails to perform reasonable age verification methods to verify the age of an individual attempting to access the material,” the text of the law states.

It defines harmful material as “material that exploits, is devoted to, or principally consists of descriptions of actual, simulated, or animated display or depiction of any of the following, in a manner patently offensive with respect to minors: (i) pubic hair, anus, vulva, genitals, or nipple of the female breast; (ii) touching, caressing, or fondling of nipples, breasts, buttocks, anuses, or genitals; or (iii) sexual intercourse, masturbation, sodomy, bestiality, oral copulation, flagellation, excretory functions, exhibitions, or any other sexual act.”

In January, Pornhub started requiring identification from Louisiana-based users, following the passage of a law that makes porn sites liable for content deemed “harmful to minors.” Several copycat bills started moving through state legislatures with varying success, including in Arkansas, which recently passed its version into law.

In 2016, Utah declared porn a “public health crisis,” and "an epidemic that is harming the citizens of Utah and the nation.” Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have recently and historically represented the majority of legislators in Utah, and in 2009, Utah was considered the “online porn capital” of the United States, with the most porn consumers logging on in the nation. In 2021, Cox signed a law that would require device manufacturers to add adult content filters on all smartphones and tablets sold in Utah.

Experts say that age verification doesn’t work to protect children online, and only works to drive material that is harmful to minors to less safe spaces on the internet, while exposing adults to more risk of identity theft, private data hacks, and extortion. Immediately after SB 287 passed the house and senate in Utah, residents there started discussing how best to use virtual private networks to keep accessing porn.

E. Looking it up, seems like you have to give an ID on a third party site that then is used to log into other sites.

The catch is the workers not allowed to call in sick are those who actually operate the trains. Those crews are slashed to the bone so if someone calls in that day the train can't run, which means the schedule is completely hosed Southwest Airlines style.

The negotiations in the fall were between all the unions and the companies, for everyone getting sick leave. Here we are seeing only those workers where it is convenient for the companies to take paid sick leave receive it.

So, what happened between the blocked strike and now? Are there details missing here? None of these articles go into a lot of detail over what the unions have been doing since the original strike was blocked.

It says in the article. It was basically down a bunch of different things:

- CSX has a new CEO.
- The East Palestine disaster giving them bad PR.
- The White House, Transportation Secretary, and Labor Secretary were lobbying them to secure a deal that granted paid sick leave.
- Labor union negotiations continued and they eventually reached this agreement.
- Labor unions agreed to table discussion about precision schedule railroading.
- After CSX agreed to sick days, several other major railway companies followed suit.
- There are some restrictions on engineers using sick days that they are still negotiating. The paid sick leave only applies to 8 of the 12 unions, the other 4 that primarily represent the engineers are still negotiating. The largest company says their intention is to cover everyone under the paid sick leave policy:

quote:

We now have agreements with eight of our 12 unions providing for paid sick days. Discussions are ongoing with the remaining four unions, including BMWE (Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees), and it is our intention to ultimately have paid sick day agreements in place covering our entire scheduled workforce.

quote:

After being roundly criticized for not offering paid sick days, the leading rail companies – BNSF, CSX, Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific – have granted many of their 93,000 workers four paid sick days a year through labor negotiations, with an option of taking three more paid sick days from personal days.

“We’re very happy about this. We’ve been trying to get this for decades,” said Artie Maratea, president of the Transportation Communications Union. “It was public pressure and political pressure that got them to come to the table.”

When Joe Biden and Congress enacted legislation in December that blocked a threatened freight rail strike, many workers angrily faulted Biden for not ensuring that the legislation also guaranteed paid sick days. But since then, union officials says, members of the Biden administration, including the transportation secretary, Pete Buttigieg, and labor secretary, Marty Walsh, who stepped down on 11 March, lobbied the railroads, telling them it was wrong not to grant paid sick days.

“We’ve made a lot of progress,” said Greg Regan, president of the Transportation Trades Department of the AFL-CIO, the main US labor federation. “This is being done the right way. Each railroad is negotiating with each of its individual unions on this.”

“The rail companies,” he added, “miscalculated about how the public would see their huge profits and the stories of how hard rail workers’ lives were and not having sick days and the draconian policies they were operating under.”
