euphronius posted:yeah. yet every media story is about layoffs How else can they frame their story that the Fed needs to back off the rate hikes? If they show how things are really going, then the free money will never come back. Also those lowly peons might get uppity and think they can demand more money for their labor. The media needs to make sure the word layoff is always at the front of their mind. Can’t risk losing your current menial underpaid job if they think there are no other jobs out there.

Wall Street executives played a key role for Biden during his 2020 victory over Trump. They spent over $74 million in support of his candidacy. Some of the party’s wealthiest donors, including media mogul Haim Saban, tech executive Reid Hoffman and Wall Street titan Donald Sussman, all moved immediately to get into Biden’s corner in his reelection bid. https://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/02/joe-biden-to-attend-2024-campaign-fundraiser-hosted-by-tony-james.html

Red Baron posted:six weeks? the stories never ended. This stuff was running in every media market, but around here the way it worked was the CBS affiliate interviewed multiple small business tyrants who cried about how they couldn't keep going because they couldn't hire anyone, because "no one wants to work anymore." That segued into stories about "free government money" and how business owners "couldn't compete with socialist policies." Within a few weeks of running that, the pandemic Berniebucks were gone.

I remember the violent feeling I felt when my wife's boss's failson wrote a letter for her at the beginning of the pandemic saying that she's an essential worker and she should come into work, and definitely not work remotely. She's a graphic designer. btw she still wears a mask there every day because her workplace regularly has outbreaks of COVID.

We've talked about this over in the Covid thread. It's probably not likely to become a super new variant that will spread everywhere. What's more likely is that this particular one is evolving to perfectly constantly infect that one guy and his immune system. Basically his own bespoken variant engineered to bypass his immune system completely

It's more like having a cancer, your organs and body will slowly lose cells over time, your body will deteriorate slowly. There won't be any signs until it's too late for any treatment. It could take years

I don't think deaths even really matter to most people at this point. Especially since death data is delayed and a lot of them would be attributed to something else. The only thing that would matter is a wave where enough people are too sick to work that it impacts their ability to shop and go to restaurants. And that's within the context of a current and future reality where most people are not going to feel any pressure to quarantine while positive, so anyone sick with COVID but able to stand will be at work.

I don't think that would do anything. Maybe if it killed every celebrity in a month. It's not that the mortality was normalized, it's that the media decided to normalize mortality, that won't change just because mortality does.
