This came up in the last strike too. The DGA has a "no-strike, no stoppage" clause in its contract, and that exposes the guild and its members to legal liability if they breach that clause. The position of both the DGA and the studios at the time was that if you were employed by a studio and not under specifically a writing contract, studios were free to demand that you do what's known as "a-h" work, even if you are a member of the WGA for work you do in other places.quote:For reference, the MBA defines (a)-(h) writing services as follows: The WGA's position was that members of the guild shouldn't perform those services, but WGA members employed as non-writers on their current job wouldn't be disciplined for performing that work. IDK if or how that's changed. Notably, last time around, the DGA publicly issued a reminder to their members that they were legally obligated to keep working. They haven't done that this time around. There's a link to "Information for DGA Members Regarding the WGA Strike" on their website that may very well contain that guidance, but it's locked behind a log-in page. Hopefully they find quick success and my union is inspired enough to go for bigger pay raises so we aren’t falling behind actual cost of living increases every year. Just kidding, that won’t happen. If you need assistance, don't hesitate to apply for the Entertainment Community Fund. The application might say something about having to work in the industry for a minimum of 5 years but go ahead and apply even if you haven't been working that long, they will be loosening their criteria during the strike.

Edward Mass posted:The WGA negotiators put out this graphic for how much their proposed deal costs the major players: It's so little money to them and they'll fight us tooth and nail to keep every penny. Even if you look at profits instead of revenues, our demands would only take up 1.5%, maybe 2% of their profits. And that's only if we got everything we want, without negotiating! I'm sure we could meet in the middle on some numbers but there were so many points they wouldn't even negotiate with us. Also, update from the picket lines today: - Tons of other unions are coming out to support which is great. Saw a lot of SAG members out marching today, along with IATSE and Animation Guild. - Directors Guild is currently negotiating. Their needs are different from ours, but we are united in pushing for wage increases to keep up with inflation (and to make up for overall pay decreases over the past decade). We're also united on the residuals front, as streaming residuals are garbage and a lot of us rely on residuals to make ends meet. I doubt they'll strike but who knows, the studios are being real pieces of poo poo this time around. - SAG is set to begin negotiations on June 7. I could potentially see a SAG strike which would really cripple the studios. SAG is aligned with us on AI stuff -- the studios would love to crank out a dozen AI-written Thor movies starring deepfake Chris Evans. Also, actors rely on residuals even more than writers do. - Overall, spirits are high on the picket lines. Everyone is still fired up and we are prepared for a long fight. I have enough saved up to weather the storm but I know I'm in the minority. Already hearing about some of my friends looking for jobs at Starbucks and Costco. I'm hoping the AMPTP comes back to the table soon but I bet we're out here until July at a minimum.

SAG/DGA and WGA all striking would basically put them over a barrel. I'm not sure how US labour law works, would there be room for joint negotiation if one of the other unions strike, over the shared concerns?

Yeah, my first thought when I saw they were pulling basically new shows was the residuals thing. It's doing anything they can to not have to say "we were 0.00000001% less profitable this quarter" to shareholders.

I read an interesting observation that the execs aren't hip to the fact that thanks to Twitter how much of the revolution has been televised and people see writers and assorted creatives as peoples, if nothing else to see how they dunk on the higher ups.

kliras posted:well it gets stupider GODDAMN HBO Nordic was such a loving nightmare to use. HBO Max is slightly better, however they just…stopped airing What We Do In The Shadows midway through the last season for two weeks, for no reason! So we were two weeks behind but don’t worry, the WWDITS social media accounts spoiled a major plot point when it aired in the US. Hell even S1 of The Mandalorian was a loving shitshow outside of the US. We got the first season nearly a year after it aired because….????? So it was cool we could watch Baby Yoda Mania from a distance and never got to enjoy watching the show as it aired for the first season. What gets me is that ever since, it’s aired the same schedule here as the US, like I get if you had to negotiate rights for other properties outside of the US but Disney why the gently caress would you just delay your Massive IP Show a year because of it. E: Also jazzed to see this thread!

before hbo max came out, the bitrate on regular hbo looked like it was 3500 or something crazy. i remember doing the trial of regular hbo, and it was basically unwatchable. i think people would watch/rip the episodes when they dropped on amazon for reasons i don't even remember hbo are definitely ruining everything now (again), but the good days didn't last as long for many of us as some would have us think. and they still screwed up their 4:3 remasters kliras fucked around with this message at 11:55 on May 26, 2023 |

Anyone asking why Apple and Amazon are in the media streaming business will get it wrong if they approach it from a business perspective. Prime Video was well known to be all about Bezos’ dating life, and Tim Cook loves to go to Hollywood parties. They have other sources of money, if this gets ugly the interesting play for either of them would be to stick it to the other players and sign separately, can they do that? Ted Sarandos is the most charismatic person I’ve seen work a room in real life, and I’ve seen Obama! He spent a lot of time convincing creative people he was on their side and now he’s burning it down, which I guess makes sense as he now has All The Money and a lot of content packed away.

Remulak posted:They have other sources of money, if this gets ugly the interesting play for either of them would be to stick it to the other players and sign separately, can they do that? Production companies can sign seperate from other companies. They still have to negotiate and all that, but there's nothing stopping them. That's how Letterman kept his writers during the last strike. He owned the production company for his show and the Late Late Show. They agreed to the contract way before anyone else, so their writers could go back to work just fine.
