They can't buy anything from the NATO block because pretty much everything complicated like fighter jets has British parts in it so the Brits get to veto sales and have. And I guess they never got desperate enough to buy stuff from the Russians, which is just as well for them given how Russian gear has been performing. Throw in their repeated economic crisis and their tiny defence budget and they probably couldn't afford to buy Russian stuff. They've basically aquirred almost no new gear since the Falklands war. Their Navy is rusting at the piers and gets almost zero sea time. Their Army's gear is ancient, and it's questionable if their Air Force still has any jets that are operational enough to fly.

However the Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow was the most disorganized, horrible poo poo-show of an airport I've ever had the misfortune to visit.

I know Ukraine has a handful of planes, Russia might have a bunch of them (or maybe not so much anymore?), and there's air defense everywhere. The war, then, is mostly a ground-based engagement with artillery backing up the lines. How effective would Russia be in the face of an actual NATO combined arms force that incorporated high altitude reconnaissance / bombers, long range missiles from modern air fighters, and a naval carrier group off the coast? Because uh, Russia doesn't even seem close to the technology gap in modern warfare.

My understanding was that they were airborne/light infantry, which is exactly who you don't want trying to stand in the way of an assault. They would still be somewhat evenly matched, because Ukraine is just using those units and gear that were already in the sector to conduct the flank operations. When the Ukrainian soldiers involved noticed that the Russians were folding almost on contact, they actually had to summon reinforcements on both flanking actions to continue the operation, and leave enough people behind to consolidate.
