I think your ability to chair a committee is determined at least in part by how long you've been on that committee, I'm not sure how it works exactly. My guess is that an appointed senator has a pretty low chance of reelectability compared to someone who won the popular vote. Feinstein started as SF City council, was appointed interm mayor, then won reelection, later was elected to the US Senate so (to me) makes sense to put her on powerful committees since she'll probably be there until she dies (see thread for details) Democrats will probably put some up and coming person on the new junior seats in intelligence, judiciary etc. Feinstein stepping down means California loses a very powerful voice especially on the judiciary committee, I bet they were hoping to see her chair that one and let California help choose supreme Court justices etc. Even if he appointed CA senator gets on those committees they'll be junior members, barely above observer status. California also would have, I think, two appointed senators? She's definitely been pivotal in selecting Supreme Court justices.

Speaking as the child of two parents with dementia, you can't "just tell" them anything without substantial legal work. The first drat thing dementia takes away is your ability to realize you're having mental problems. The only way for DiFi's children to get her out of the Senate is for them to go to court and get a conservatorship put in place -- the kind Britney Spears had. That will be nasty and painful for the entire family -- not just because of "people will find out" but because of somebody you love being taken to court, against their will, for a trial to prove they're demented. We got (in a weird way) lucky in that we -- our mother had known much earlier -- only found out about our father's dementia the week he died, and that my mother had a durable power of attorney in place when she was involuntarily moved from her duplex to the closed dementia ward of her assisted living complex. Otherwise we would have had to drag somebody who thought she was competent, and could easily talk and defend herself, into court to be proven incompetent. I can understand -- but not defend -- why the Feinstein kids wouldn't have been willing to do this. All it takes is one family member, or professional associate, saying "She's fine, I will testify that she's fine" to make the whole thing even more grotesque and horrible.

Boxer and Feinstein kept their seats since 93 until Boxer retired in 2018. An appointed replacement for Feinstein would have an advantage if they seek re-election, so people have been suggesting state politicians that would be capable of being a replacement but would rather not do a full term.

Yeah I'm not an expert on this Presumably feinstein is working with Californians interests first and Senate democrats interests second* so there's some kind of synergy between the gubernatorial office back home and the Senate out east and make sure our tax dollars are being routed back to our state, or something *

The California State Assembly has passed it, it just needs to go up against the state Senate. There are states where they have already been banned and companies adjusted and used other dyes. Don't know why they wouldnt just do it across the board. Saved some CEO the price of a car for their kids maybe.

Hospital is now trying to argue that the bonus was for retention purposes and if my sibling is leaving then they aren't obligated to it, but there's nothing in the contract that says anything like that, just "work through this date = get signing bonus" and it very much feels like the hospital is playing a game of chicken hoping they'll give up before involving a lawyer.

The state is going to have to update fire insurance regulations finally A lot of people in rural areas have been complaining about how their fire abatement measures don't impact their property insurance rates, I don't know the specifics but it's a deep rabbit hole. A stucco house with a steel roof and no trees within 100' might fall under the same rate as their next door neighbor who has a cedar shingle roof nestled in a bunch of bone dry pine trees. Or something. Apparently rates are done very broadly because the calculations were designed in the pre computer era
